for me this is a very odd topic to ask about.. i hate cleaning my car and when i do it normally gets 2 buckets of hot water and a splash of wash-n-wax (8 quid for 5 litres you can`t go wrong people!) hose off and a flick over with the aqua blade....

meguiars and autoglmm spring to mind but theres sooooo many bottles and products out there i give up trying..

what main steps and what order!! polish? wax? paint renovator? carnuba stuff? clay bars??

i had a look on detailingworld but oh my god they take things so serious! measuring paint thickness?? wtf! get a life people.......

anyhow it normally looks like this so what do i use?????

As you have said, your obviously not looking for a show stopping Concours 106... Lol..

Soooo...

Wash with the 2 bucket method & hot water... A decent lambswool wash mitt & some car wash... (I use Meguiars NXT wash)..

Dry off with a drying towel instead of a chamois... Meguiars & Sonus drying towels are popular...

You'll see good results with a clay bar kit... Meguiars for example.. (Clay bar & spray)

They also do a 3 stage kit.... Paint cleaner, polish & wax...

Tyres dressed with Meguiars Endurance Tyre Gel..... Exhaust polished with Meguiars NXT Metal polish....

A good hoover on the interior... Dash & panels detailed with Meguiars Trim Detailer...

Windows with Meguiars NXT Glass cleaner....

Applicator pads to buff on the polishes & wax... 100% Terry Towels to buff off etc...

The list is endless... :p

Check out www.meguiars.co.uk (http://www.meguiars.co.uk) & www.polishedbliss.co.uk (http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk) mate.. :)

Are you on commission Steve? :p

What exactly is the "two bucket method"? Sorry if that's a thick question :o

Daz

two bucket method is one bucket for your shampoo and another bucket with clean water in so that you can dip your mitt into it to clean it a bit then dip it in the shampoo it cuts down on the amount of swirls inflicted on the paint

I have always used Meguiars products & have always got on well with them.... No reason to change... :p

2 bucket method involves...

1 bucket with hot soapy water in, then another bucket with just water in (No soap)... After washing over the car, dunk the wash mitt in the bucket with no soap in & it will remove the grit from the wash mitt etc.... Stops your putting the dirt / grit back into the soapy water & applying it back onto the car...

Prevents swirl marks & light scratches... :)

Ah, that makes sense. Got loads of scratches and swirls at the moment, but I'll try this anyway :) Cheers

The Megs stuff is good, but if you have a chance to experiment do so as there are much better products out there than you'll find down Halfords. Often for no extra cost too! If only my car had body work worth bothering with these days :(

hmmm that sounds like more than 15 minutes efforts!!

right i`ll have a go...

have moticed various bottles of stuff i`ve tried kicking about on the shelves..

whats the deal with waxes and polish`s..

probably a dumb question but is there a difference??

bad explanation:

ok is wax the same as polish or are they different process`s entirely??

Think of polish as a nutrient for your paint and wax as sealing it all in and protecting it.

Steve Saunders

Basically, polish is a cutting compound... Shouldn't be polishing the car every week, but a wax can be applied more frequently....

Polish: Revives & conditions paint... Gives gloss etc.. Polishes out surface imperfections prior to waxing...

Wax: Makes paint rich & dark.. Adds protection... Gives great shine..!!! :)

polishs arnt really cutting compounds, as CC are/can be alot strong.

i never polish mine, cant even remember the last time i did! prob about every 8 weeks, only when it needs it (loosing it shine!), but waxing it loads atm, and its got a great shine to it.

slammed - i would just get your hands on some, megs nxt wash, step 2 polish, nxt wax, tyre dressing and that will get you good results. wash and wax weekly and polish when ever you feel it needs it.

but if you havnt cleaned it for a while, i would get a clay kit, used to get impurities you cant see, e.g tar, sap, grit etc etc out, just wash, then while its still wet spray on the detailer and wip over the pannels with the clay, then wash again and dry :)

After washing try auto glym super resin polish. Has a decent cut in it to get a nice deep shine

zestdeux- yeah i`ve read that but looking at a long list of products isn`t what i need to know...

its the stages more than anything...

least now i know wax and polish are different things!!

hmmm looks like i`m gonna have arms like tyson after doing that lot either that or people will think i`ve watched the entire jenna jameson collection...

so basically i`m gonna have to

wash- 2 bucket method
clay bar
polish

then....

wax...

have found autoglym bumper care is bloody good stuff on xsi trim.. anything better or can i stick with that ???

Daz
02-08-2007, 07:37 PM
LOL at the jenna jameson comment:D

if you happy with the product then why change to any thing else i`d stick with the AG bumper care

If your looking for something simple why not try the local petrol station and use the power washer? as good as anything for a quick 15 min thing.

If your wanting to get the car looking good use the stated :) bumper care is great! O paint renovator is like T-Cut but a litte harsher not to be used often.

I used megs stuff for a while like it, nxt gen wax was great, then moved accross to autoglym stuff use a mixture of both but yet to find a wax that beats collinite 974! :D now you do need a whole JJ collection to train to to get that stuff of :)

The good stuff mate ;)

I use Zymol Autowash, Zymol Leather cleaner, used to use Zymol Cleaner wax but it was a right bugger to get off and the white dust went everywhere!

I had some carbon wax on order but had to cancel it :(

Thats ok then:D

Yeah there is a nack at the cleaner wax same with HD Clense, leave it too long it's a pain in the arse, not long enough it leaves residue everywhere.

Swissvax Cleaner Fluid is alot more user friendly;)
