View Full Version : why is it cutting out?

every now and then my car will have an off day and it will keep cutting out, i tried to average it out and see if it happened more often on cold days, or when it had been left for a long time... etc. but i think it just does it as and when it pleases.
Anyway, my ex had a look at it and couldn't find anything, and apart from cutting out every now and then it runs fine..... so whats going on??! ???

While driving? When stopping? When changing gear??

last time it happened i was coming out of the hospital and it cut out half way on to the dual carriage way, some bloke had to swerve outta the way it was quite scary.... it just seems to be happening randomly, the only pattern i've noticed is that it happens quite a lot when i change from reverse to first, altho not straight away, a few seconds after, but you can feel it about to happen, if ya get me??!

mine does that!!! lol u can tell its about to cut out it runs pretty shitty if u put your foot down it starts to hesitate then jus cuts out! mines been doing it for a few weeks now and its driving me NUTS! random as hell aint it , 1 min its fine next min its cut out, does urs take a while to start again afterwards?
Lacey

i tend to have to give it a few tries to start up again and then it runs fine..... i just can't understand it?!

Same ere, normally happens on the move at certain revs!
Drives me up the wall, dad seams to think its either the trottle body or injectors!
doing my head in!

sometimes mine used to struggle to get passed 3k but i changed the tdc sensor on gearbox as that what the diagnostic machine said , it ran ok for about 50 miles then cut out again! :'(
i have to try it a few times too before it starts again, i wont drive my car now because its unreliable so its sat outside the house

Its not like mine seems to be happening in a pattern though... it just does it randomly... like the other day, it happened 3 times in a row, then usually it just goes back to normal then it did it twice again... i was like, 'what?!'
my car wouldn't get over 40mph for a few days..... then it was running fine again..... it just has bad days i think, 90% of the time its brilliant but occassionally it like to piss me off.

coil pack or idle control valve probably
Lacey

coil pack or idle control valve probably
so it's on its way out rather than gone... cos it runs fine usually

mine occasionally randomly cuts out, seems to happen when slowing, coming to roundabouts etc but if im going with enough pace i usually bump start it :P
it happened with a previous car (VW Polo) and it was fixed by getting the throttle body cleaned :)
so try that, i should realy do it too but never have time lol.

mine use to do this would just randomly cut out while going along, wouldnt bumpstart or anything had to pull over and it would just start back up, but now its just seemed to stop doing it but ive not changed anything on the car that would effect it ???

Is it just cutting straight out or does it lose power then cut out. Mine did everything that there is to do and i ended up with every sensor going ( idle control valve, throttle potentiometer, lambda sensor, coil pack, injectors, fuel pump, crank sensor and map sensor ) but then again it is french. If it just cuts dead then it is more likely crank sensor but if it loses power then dies then it could be many things, but throttle potentiometer can cause different symptoms.

I know mine cuts out and then comes back like a second later, sends me flying back into the set, does it in 1st 2nd 4th mainly, really hate it!

When i start the car for the 1st time that day, and drive say 150metres to he main road/round about, it more often that not, will cut out if i dont keep the revs above 1k.
Fuzz you saqid the idle control valve. Dont suppose you can doa quik summary of what/how to do it?

I have a similar problem. Only when the car has been started from cold though.

Nath chuck up a pic of your engine bay and i'll point it out - it changes places depending on throttle body / engine size / year

JESUS! i never knew this problem was quite so common! thats crazy! In my corsa i had all the sensors go (at once!) and when they were messing about before they finally went, it felt similar to how my pug feels now, would be fine one minute then be a right git the next! I'm dedicating my weekend to my car this week though so maybe i'll just have a fiddle about. see how it goes!

bit extreme lol...
coil pack, iacv, and the map senor are the guys thet tend to upset things, but 1st i would start by cleaning the iacv, i did do a post on QPC but well..... i have a piccy so show where she is on a quiky il wip her up..

remove it and wipe her clean with petrol, only two torx bolts holding it on.
As for the 1.1 am sure its like a little black box on the trottle body.

Mine was a bad case as every sensor went one after the other, but the first thing would be the iacv. Mine was an ebay bargain ( or so i thought )

hehe slowly getting to the big 1k! I want to change the pads and disks on mine, but not sure how to bleed the breaks and replace stuff. If possible take pics as you go along. Would be a great help!!

you do not need to bleed brakes when only changing discs and pads
TIP: before driving the car after changing them pump the peddle a few times so there ready to use.

Sorry to hear that Lacey. Is it worse when in cold weather?
I find that mine has to be kept moving or at high revs in the first 5 seconds of moving or it will stall. Other than that it behaves. Strange! ???

Could be coil pack, plugs, leads anything like that really. Also check the fuel pump is workin ok, did 1 on a gti the other month with the same problems. Might be worth re-initialisin the ECU: Ignition off, ignition on for 10 seconds, foot flat to the floor, ignition off, wait 15 seconds
