Apart from the light pods i think phill has had the exact same things on his car at one point or another lol.
Where were those vids taken? I'd love to take the R along them some time.

Very slagish, like it especially first two shots of her...not too keen on the stickers though.
Does that light pod affect handling at all?
Looks like it would add a load of weight over the front end?
Dan C
07-01-2007, 09:32 PM
Just out of interest where did you get the pod from?
pugginquik
07-01-2007, 10:48 PM

Just out of interest where did you get the pod from?
ebay
i bought an empty pod and got some cheap spots and made them fit
pod on a budget as i didnt wanna spend 400quid on a proper one

i even stuck 2 of halfords 130/90w bulbs in 2 and there certainly a hell of a lot brighter
dont put em in ya normal lights though they will burn the loom
i used a thicker wire for the spots cos i wanted to run rally bulbs in them :)
looking good there mate. as said bet you can see for miles!

That pod is a beast! Give someone a nice surprise with that thing! Keep it dirty, looks good!

well ive got a week off work and nothing planned for it
having had my bottom engine mounted sorted and my blowing like a centre exit manifold welded up the cars been pulling really nicely and sound much better too
so today i decided id go out and do what the car seems to love doing
(nothing to do with me honest)
was good weather for it nice cold air for the engine but not damp so grip levels are good

after writing my company car off last night i just think its stupid, especially on blind country roads
leeds106
23-01-2007, 08:41 PM
vision is very high when im going for it
last thing i wanna do is destroy my car so i always back off at the 1st hint not being able to clearly see whats coming
thats what makes being on track more fun itss 110% all the time :)

23-01-2007, 09:15 PM
Ou do just wot i like doing ;D Except your car is better at it.
This happened last year though so be careful. I was going half your speed

My mates polo was the worst! It just folded up like foil!
This photo doesnt show how bad it was. The whole drivers side bent outwards like this >
The boot colapsed into the back seats. The wheels folded up. Funny thing was it still started up and he was actually able to drag it forwards.

James.G
24-01-2007, 06:03 PM
car sounds wicked mate :)
would never take mine up there!! she'd be filthy!
Why a vtr engine?
Why not a vts or gti?
leeds106
25-01-2007, 01:06 AM
cos everything cost twice the price to mod a 16v and if ya tune an 8v right they kick ass
upto 95 my car is all over a vts
leeds106
27-01-2007, 05:15 PM
ill do a full report 2morrow with pics and vids
went down to awesome gti in manchester with the PGAC nw section
car went on rollers and made.......................
101bhp@the wheels
well happy with the outcome
and even better the torque band is awesome
peak torque kicks in practically at 2k and only raises slightly all the way along till 5.5k when it starts to drop off
think it made 108lbs of torque but i need to check
ill stick up all onfo 2morrow but needless to say im well happy with the outcome
Tuscan
27-01-2007, 05:42 PM
Impressive.
Could you list the performance spec? I.e work, parts youv had done.
leeds106
27-01-2007, 05:44 PM
98bhp vtr engine with 35k on clock
gmc 4-1 manifold
original magnex group A pugsport system
stainless induction filter
thats it for the engine
Tuscan
27-01-2007, 05:47 PM
less of a gain that Phil then?
Hes running the quicky engine right? 75bhp. with raceland filter, mai, and some exhaust system.
leeds106
27-01-2007, 05:54 PM
phils made 75bhp@ the wheel which matches the factory fly wheel figure of 75bhp
mine is 101@wheels which is 3bhp over the factory standard reading from the fly
so technically i made 3bhp more from pretty much same mods
im interested to see his torque curve though cos mine litrally is a straight line from 2k till 5.5k which is awesome usually the torque is a raising curve
rich106quiksilver
27-01-2007, 06:02 PM

ahhh WD40 in the pic, how appropriate.
Looking good though the projectors look mean! Heard a few problems though about bad fitting of projectors and leaking water, maybe something to look out for?

these need the lense taking off and cleaning inside as the previuos owner didnt put the side lights in so some crap has got in through the hole but other than that the build quality of these is pretty damn good tbh
they look far better quality than the silver/chrome ones
I want those lights!!! Can't find any on Ebay anymore though :(

as some of you may know i stuck the 106 on ebay and currently its still on there with a day to go
had a shed load of interest in it and has over 30 watchers so far so be interesting to see how it finishes i guess
now for a few weeks ive kinda lost heart with it as its got a few flaws non of them major but enough to dishearten me about sticking with it after over 5 years of owning it(sounding like fuzzy yet ?lol)
now i know once i did the few things i want to do with it the car would be a real monster on road and hald its own even more on track
but im inpatient and keep getting fed up of getting obsticals in my way slowing me down or sometimes stopping me in my tracks on the way to what i wanna do with the car
today i sent a lod of messages to random cars i liked to see if they fancied a swap or part x and a few said no and a few said lets talk
currently im in a talk with a guy over his celica GT4 the newer round headlight shape(always liked em)
and now im getting my hopes up as its all going very well so far and everytime i get my hopes up with anyhting it all goes tits up lol
but on the other hand i also will be gutted to probably tears to see the 106 go too
in the words of fuzzy
HELP I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO! lol

Eeeeww, a toyota celica. Don't know why but toyota has never ceased to amaze me at the ugliness of all the celica's. The first one were poo, the second ones (round headlights) were a bit better but still ugly, and the 3rd shape is just downright pants. Probably the ugliest car out there imo.
Good luck though mate, hope ya get a good un'!

im not overly fussed about getting something that might need a little work too it cos that way it will feel more like my own car
its pretty much standard so a good base to start in the world of turbo;d cars and its got luxury to boot
there not the fastest things on the planet but with some choice mods would be more than interesting to drive about
and insurance isnt a problem to me now on 99% of cars
rich106
08-07-2007, 05:01 PM
well if it was up to me take it of road by a crap car/walk lol and do it that way and then theres no time limit but up to you mate if i had cash i would have it i know what a pure beast it is lol:p
leeds106
08-07-2007, 05:08 PM
i thought about taking it off the road but everything i wanna get done on it wouldnt meen having to take it off the road anyhow
list is
adjustable suspension for a better road to track set up
bike carbs
cam
fix a few little things and tidy engine bay up in process
with the above mods i know for a fact it will be silly quick for an 8v and touch a 14 sec 1/4
its currently already faster than it should be so above mods can only make it quicker

well 1st of all i cant find an inlet for love nor money so meens having one made which not only costs also takes a long time
(boggs bros currently have a 8 week waiting period on inlets)
and ive had it 5 years and as much as i love it i just want to get my teeth into something new
ive driven so silly cars and although i dont wanna go daft i kinda want something different and something like the gt4 feels like a steady step towards turbohood lol

as a fair few people will be aware i am in the process of fitting R6 bike carbs onto my quikys VTR engine
over the past few weeks ive started to amass the parts i need
so far i have got:-
braided fuel hosing
fuel pressure gauge
inlet manifold
rubber coated pipe clips
on the to buy list so i can get onto fitting it all are:-
R6 carbs fully rejetted and rebuilt from shenpar
X2 fuel pressure regulators
45mm silicone hose
ill keep updating my post as i progress so people can see whats been done etc
James.G
17-07-2007, 02:19 PM
wow, really intrested in this... same route as i was thinking yesterday, or was going to go for some GSXR bodies allthough i would need management for them.
how much are the R6s carbs costing you from shenpar? and do you know what bhp there 1.6 R6 xsi is running?
good luck with it...
and i loved the Team 8v t-shirt lol (if it was you?)
leeds106
17-07-2007, 02:20 PM
the first part on was becoming the hardest part was to source an inlet manifold from my car
after endless calls it turned out noone makes them for the newer port spacings that the 2002+ TU 8v's have :(
so i managed to get one(big thanks to mat106)which ment it was all systems go :)
inlet

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u227/leeds106qs/carb%20conversion/17072007001.jpg
first step was to cut off what i didnt want handyly there is a weld line across them that was just about in the perfect place so i used that

17-07-2007, 02:21 PM
this should be an interesting progress blog :)
good luck man!
leeds106
17-07-2007, 02:25 PM
the inlet pipes are larger than i expected them to be(actually 40mm!)
a problem that would ultimatly reduce the possible power i could get from the carbs but something that could be sorted with a custom made inlet once id got it up and running
so ive not only saved myself about £200 by making this myself its also gonna be better than i expected too :)
I dont mean to sound a complete fool, but i'm not the most technically minded of people.
What are the advantages of using these?
James.G
17-07-2007, 02:29 PM
have a read thorugh the shenpar xsi feature in last months PFC mate, basically like bike trottle bodies but without the expensive managment... i think lol.
leeds106
17-07-2007, 02:33 PM
yeah basically they do what throttle bodies do but they dont require the expense of engine management
if i get this working i think i can have it all going and running for under £400
the advantages of bodies over carbs is they will use less fuel and run overall better but this is gonna cost no more than£400 whereas throttle bodies are upwards of £2500+
so for me the noise and a nice power increase and a massive wad of cash less than bodies makes it worth the while
the noise will be awesome and anyone who has driven an old car with carb will know how torquey carbs are
(something i want as we all know torque wins races bhp is for showing off)
James.G
17-07-2007, 02:35 PM
i love them haha... read my post above leeds incase you didnt see it :)
my mates got webber 45 on his mini... hmmmm...
Thanks for clearing that up :)
leeds106
17-07-2007, 02:41 PM
i keep getting told to go for bodies but in no way would i spend £2500+ on the car id rather just buy a new car if i had that cash to throw about
initially i want the noise
(something that will be verynice as the carbs point right at the driver hehe)
any power increase will be a plus
at 1st i will be running them on the enigne with a standard cam until i figure out which cam profile to go for
once its cammed and been to boggs bros for fully setting up correctly im hopeful of reaching around 125-130bhp+(current power is 113bhp)
not a mind blowing figure by any standards but the sheer torque it should put out should make it pull like a train to 110 pretty nice
James.G
17-07-2007, 02:45 PM
130 is a good figure tho.
if all goes to plan i should have a VTR lump in there end of this years/start of 2008.
then will look into carbs some time after that...
will be good to see how you get on.

and nah im staying 8v
cheaper to mod the way i wanna mod it and its nice to manage to keep with 16v 106's and even sometimes pass the odd one :p
ben306
17-07-2007, 03:31 PM
will see what its like against a less modded and cheaper 16v, would be fun to see it against the spaxo, as I dont think Bic was gaining on him at all on the track at FCS, would have loved him to have gone out in the rallye, reckon he would have done Bic then, who knows

well with the weather being rather nice today i did some work on the inlet for the carbs
1st job was to seperate the pipes so i can pip the hosing round them to join them too the carbs
right side had been done just needs tidying

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u227/leeds106qs/carb%20conversion/Photo-0013.jpg
then was the problem of what to do about the brake servo which i sorted by using a few of the connectors from the unused part of the inlet
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u227/leeds106qs/carb%20conversion/Photo-0016.jpg
one is from the original fixing for the brake servo the other is one of the oil brethers

you can get away with using only 1 regulator (with return) but dropping from injection pressures down to about 3 psi means the adjuster is very sensitive
don`t use normal silicone hosing as the petrol will rot it out (oh and fluoro lined stuff is 80quid a meter) i cried when i bought this!!!!!
noticed your keeping ecu for spark so wirng ain`t an issue
16v?? i`d rather suck a nut!! with my shenpar engine its only gti`s on bodies and/or major cams that get away and only then its 80/90 plus
the carbs will come jetted enough to run but a trip to get them fine tuned will release a few more ponies.. nick uses mikeanics up in congleton for this and i rate him highly..

yeah im gonna run 2 regulators so i can tune it easier
and ive got braided fuel hosing from a local carparts place which is only £3.50p a meter:)
yeah im ordering carbs direct from shenpar that have been rebuilt and jetted for my car so its all ready to go once they arrive
he wasnt too sure if he had any in stock yesterday and was a touch busy to go look at the time
but he will source me some and have em out to me in a week he said if not :)

i meant the hose that joins the carbs to inlet mate..........
also mine were supplied "to suit" engine but unless bogg bros have now perfected the art it won`t be spot on...

i meant the hose that joins the carbs to the inlet..........
also unless bogg bros have perfected the art (or nick uses somewhere else) they won`t be perfect.... mine ran well but mike still managed to get another 12 horses out of it....
oops ignore this!!!!
leeds106
31-07-2007, 06:54 PM
ah right with ya on the hosing now
ill be having it all set up after while anyhow
at 1st im gonna have it running all by myself best it will until i cam it once ive got the cam in it ill be taking it for a full set up
saves 2 trips for it setting up and the cost that way

31-07-2007, 06:55 PM
question for you though about the brake servo
how many pipes did you tap yours into cos on normal intake its technically plummed in to run off all 4
my mate runs his off only one and has lost some peddle feel till it gets low
im hoping unning mine on just 2 should be fine as most carb conversions seem to only run the servo from 2 of the intake pipes
slammed106
31-07-2007, 06:56 PM
definatly...... the cam`ll mean any fine tuning done on the carbs will need re-doing...
what are you doing about airfilter??
slammed106
31-07-2007, 07:00 PM
my servo only sucks off the nearest inlet tract can`t say i`ve noticed much pedal difference but everything was fully braided and bias valve fitted at same time as engine...
the dizzy was plumbed up into this vaccum line aswell but mike removed it as it was causing a fluttering on the advance so the dizzy`s non-vacuum now not that any of that bothers you as you ain`t running 1 hahaha

what are you doing about airfilter??
initially for a week or so im gonna steal my mates spare set of filter socks but im looking at getting the small 40mm k&n's as they seem a better fit and i know socks can be sucked in or eaten away by the carbs sucking at them
leeds106
31-07-2007, 07:03 PM
my servo only sucks off the nearest inlet tract can`t say i`ve noticed much pedal difference
ah well ill be running it from 2 so should be ok for sure on 2 then if yours has been ok on 1

31-07-2007, 07:09 PM
dunno how true or not it is but i`ve heard the individual ones can strangle the engine..
better than nowt though!!!!
oh 1 more thing!!!!! throttle cable....... if your happy to fit carbs this won`t pose much of an issue but it`ll need addressing.. i ended up with a tandem (uber long) brake cable on mine... but the pedal travels bloody short you get use to it though
leeds106
31-07-2007, 07:15 PM
ill buy a new cable as there silly long the ones GSF sell as there universal for the s1 and s2
should be quite easy to fit once the inlet is all off what with the extra space

31-07-2007, 07:16 PM
any chance you could take some close up pics of your bay and the carbs so i can use them as a reference if needs be come the day i fit mine?

wow.this is a cool thread.cant wait to see these up and running.
alot cheaper than i thought aswel.
how much will it be thought wen u take it for the fine tuning once they're fitted??
leeds106
31-07-2007, 07:24 PM
suppose the cost will depend on how much time they put into tunning it and how they tune it
guess if its on a rolling road and spend about 2 hours or so doing variuos runs to fine tune it to the best then its worth every penny as ill know what its making power wise too :)

also what power yours running at and if ya have what 1/4 times you managed?

emmissions!!!! eek... well....
with the dizzy set to 12degrees of advance the emmisions are HIGH but backed off to 0degrees it JUST scrapes through with a friendly tester
the cams a PIPER fast road 285deg i think.. next time you call shenpar speak to Rob he`s the engine builder and specc`d / built all of mine
powerwise its about 140brake but its had just about everything done to it they could do..
1/4 times... STILL aint run it had a few disasters every trip to the pod so far last 1 being clutch dying alcon paddles on there now though so we`ll see.. on the road.. clio 172`s civic type R`s etc are mine up to about 80/90 with my box its revvin its nuts off by 125 and they come past

hmmm just thinking on the emmisions side of things
might have to make up a special "MOT time system"
consisting of 3 cats along the system lol
slammed106
31-07-2007, 08:03 PM
yeah i`ve got a std exhaust sat in the workshop that gets yearly fittings!!
you might be ok as your keeping ecu which`ll adjust timing better than a dizzy..
out of interest what are you doing about the now redundant injector holes in the head?? or are they in the inlet on your engine??
G124EME: haha there bloody addictive mate on any engine...not as refined and perfect as bodies but sooooooooo much cheaper!!
leeds106
31-07-2007, 08:07 PM
the redundant injector holes are gonna be filled with the redundant injectors
i know you can get specially made bungs to fit in them to block them off but im trying to keep costs down as much as poss
mainly due to the fact noone has fitted carb's to a 3plug ecu engine so ive no idea if this is even gonna take on a 3plug as there suppose to be a bit smarter than the single plug ones
so until i know for sure im spending as little as poss

think i might be paying him a visit once its all running to show him how its gone as he was rather interested in it once he knew noone else had done it to this engine
the engine in its currant state is already far quicker than it should be so ive got my hopes up of it being a touch better once its finished too

How hard is it to change it over?
G124EME_XSI
31-07-2007, 11:12 PM
a guessing the XSI's will come with a standard arb?
is this the same as the gti one already or not???
James.G
31-07-2007, 11:19 PM
thats the GTi 22mm one by the look of it.
and they are well easy to change over :)

Had this done to mine for 2 years - what took you so long ;)
Told you it makes the car a little easier to play with. With the gti rear torsion bars and arb, and powerflex mounts everywhere its really easy to shift weight balance and play with the back end

took me long enough to finally find one more like
seen em on ebay but somethings always stood in the way of me getting one thats all
leeds106
01-08-2007, 06:27 AM
was pretty easy to fit it although i did it the hard way by not removing the exhaust so it took a little jiggling about to get the old out and the new one on lol
i would say unless your semi cinfident i wouldnt bother trying it as the drop links can sometimes prove a kightmare if you dont have the correct tools to do it the easy way
looks like we're doing my rear bushes soon marky warky!
shame their so expensive when you add postage and vat!
