View Full Version : sub problem :S
earlier i was driving long listening to music as normal, changed a CD and when in began to play the sub wouldnt respond :S, every like few beats the sub will kick in for like a second then die again, very frustrating, anyone know what the problem may be? ive checked all wires to the amp etc
regards
Matt
ive taken the sub out the car, all wires are ok :S so has it blown? how can i check?

check ur remote wire.. ive experienced v.similar problems!!
sorri, what do u mean by remote wire? i hav the wire from the battery, the ground wire, the double lead from the head unit, a thin blue 'p.cont' lead from the head unit, and 2 cables from the sub to the amp! cheers!

ye he/she means the thin blue wire.personally it mite b a dodgy earth.but its not somethin u can check just by looking.ud havto get a multimeter on it. only thing u can do as a quick check tho is borrow a friends sub or sumat n wire it upto ur amp and see if it works. if it dus then it will b ur sub.
whats your earthing point like?
have you rubbed away the paint?
hey there everyone, right since i last posted, ive been out and totally re-done all the wiring etc and re-positioned the sub, and now it works fine! i have a feeling it was the earth wire! my earthing point is the bracket for the rear seats to the left of the boot area!
thanks for all your help, it was great i was thinkin of giving up till ATfoxy said to check the remote wire! this made me decide to check all the wires, it was quite badly done originally, its now alot more tidy!
thanks again!
oh i thought i'd try puttin the sub in up-side-down as ive seen this in other peoples cars! is this healthy for the sub? it seems to make the bass alot more punchy, if u get me!
heres some pics, just need to recarpet once i start an MDF build!

(the marks on the floor are where the sub was originally stuck down)

bit blurred but thats the amp now screwed to the back of the box, just alot more tidy than before!
cheers!

i take it youv'e reversed the wires on the sub. for inverting the sub like that.
probably not? how do u mean? its still positive to positive, neg to neg? how should it be? im not to into the whole audio-ness yet, still learning! cheers mate
I'm assuming he meant reverse the polarity, positive to negative and negative to positive on the sub terminals.
At a guess..it's going to make the sub fire the "opposite" way, to compensate for it being flipped.
thats what i was thinkin hmmm i wouldnt hav thought it would work pos to neg, neg to pos... but then again i dont have a clue... i best wait for plush to reply on that one, cheers for the idea tho mate!
Its fine to wire it like that mate, its called either 'in-phase' or 'out of phase'
ah right
so i have to change it to pos to neg, neg to pos now that its upside down?
thanks dargs!

yes as dargs explained you'll be running out of phase at the minute, try flipping them around on the sub terminals maybe easiest.

it wont of been ur remote wire tht was causin the problem ,unless it was just loose and makin a connection thn loosin the connection.coz otherwise it either wud b on or it wouldnt coz ur remote wire turns on ur amp.but in ne case 1 thing i must point out is tht u need to change ur power lead round ..the fuse holder has to be at the battery end in the engine bay.so if there is a 'short' in the electrical system in ur car then it wont get all the way up the car and blow everything goin or cause a fire.thts the whole point of it havin a fuse on it ya see.just thought id tell ya .lol

/\ erm 1 word PUNCTUATION?!?!?!
In fact he may done the overkill thing and put a fuse at both ends :D He is right though Kinger, you do need a fuse at the battery end. Preferably as close to the battery as possible.
lol oh right! thats how i had it to start with but then thought it be better inside lol im new please forgive me lol! i'll be changin that around then :O! thanks for that guys!

 That could have been an expensive mistake if the +ve wire had rubbed through somewhere. Either the battery would have exploded/melted or the wire would have melted and prob caused a fire. Get it swapped back around asap
