View Full Version : Cigarette Lighter
Scootymad 11-06-2007, 11:24 AM Any ideas on how to fit a cigarette lighter. Mine doesnt have one and im going to buy one from a local car shop... and i dont want to pay £30 to have it fitted.... Help appreciated guys...
Also, do all 106's have the same stereo code??
RobShaw 11-06-2007, 11:49 AM smoking ban on the 1st july :) I personally think you should get somthing cooler instead like an ejecter seat button :)
Stop smoking, it'll be easier and cheaper.
kempy 11-06-2007, 12:05 PM i want one too, for charging my ipod and phone etc. not for smoking :)!
any ideas
Scootymad 11-06-2007, 12:08 PM Its for my satnav lol
k!ll.b!ll 11-06-2007, 12:19 PM yip am on the same boat too, just bought a i-pod FM transmitter and i gt no ciggy socket.
where did you source yours from scootymad and how much was it cheers
gozzer 11-06-2007, 12:29 PM i'm not sure of how to fit them..and i doubt all 106's would have the same stereo code becuase then anyone who owned a 106 could steal someone elses stereo and have the code for it!?!
gozzer 11-06-2007, 12:30 PM P.S You have to ring up pug and they'll give it to you but it'll cost ya like 20 smackers!
Scootymad 11-06-2007, 12:40 PM i got mine from some little car store, most places should have them, it only cost me like £3
Scootymad 11-06-2007, 01:04 PM Couldnt i rig up the lighter to the fuse box, as it seems i have a spare fuse bit?
reader34 11-06-2007, 09:48 PM im in the same predicament as u scooty.. same car to lol very anoying to? i want to use my sat nav to :( so can we buy a kit for this type of thing?
mrmurphster 24-06-2007, 01:14 PM I'm in the same boat, really annoying not having a lighter unit.
Can anyone advise on how to do it?
Any online guides?
Scootymad 24-06-2007, 01:21 PM No online guides... buy one for like £3 then it costs about £30 to have fitted! Its stupid!!
Dan C 24-06-2007, 01:33 PM It will be a piece of piss to fit, find a positive wire and an earth wire. Hard!
reader34 25-06-2007, 11:27 AM any diargrams to help with?
Chris S 25-06-2007, 11:33 AM like what dan said. positive + earth from the lighter to a spare fuse on the box
bobs yer uncle
mechsman 25-06-2007, 12:41 PM I fitted a pair of em to my car cos i had none to start with. 1 lives in the glovebox with the satnav cable plugged in to it. The other lives in the dash (not in the proper hole tho) so I can plug in anything else I need to. I got a ripspeed one from halfords that had the male part on one end and two female sockets, each on a seperate cable on the other. Both sockets are scotch locked into the radios power and earth wires. No probs as of yet and its a switched feed as well. The pugs that have a socket aslo run off the radio circuit so not overloading it.
Scootymad 25-06-2007, 01:25 PM Swish. Cheers
mrmurphster 25-06-2007, 01:43 PM Forgive me my ignorance, the most I've done with a fuse box is change a blown fuse.
It all sounds simple enough, but is there any technique to hooking the lighter unit up to the fuse-box. Do the wires clip in to the back of fuse-box or do they need soldering? For that matter, does the fuse-box come off easy to gain access to it?
Also I have some neon lights I was looking to put in, can they be run off the same fuse, obviously as long as the fuse is capable of handling both.
Non-runner hooking it up to the radio as radio was stolen before I got the car, and the wires there are a complete mess.
liaminllan 25-06-2007, 05:50 PM id just cut the plug off the end and hard wire it to a ignition switched live and an put the - to the body of the car, if i was going to be fussy id stick an in-line fuse on the live :)
southendshaggy 25-06-2007, 05:58 PM Dont forget if you want the cig lighter to be illuminated theres a 3rd wire to think about
liaminllan 25-06-2007, 06:10 PM the 3 wires will be earth, live, switch live, you take a live from a 12v supply that is constant, switch live from the switched live for the lights(dash or headlights ect) and then earth is the body of the car, the switch live will be for the light if there is one on the aftermarket sockets.
joe106gti 25-06-2007, 10:59 PM Couldnt i rig up the lighter to the fuse box, as it seems i have a spare fuse bit?
sounds like it should work ok. good to hear your not using it to smoke. sat nav and phone charger, one thing im glad smoking was invented for!
wolfie 23-07-2007, 06:13 PM i want a ciggy lighter to for my bluetooth!!! can get cheap lighter but come to install the thing, now were havin the problem!!!! lol
Mandyyy 27-07-2007, 01:15 PM Can anyone tell me how to put in a cig lighter ?
cheeeers.
:)
mechsman 31-07-2007, 04:25 PM Just get two scotch locks, which are those blue or red things that u put a wire into and then clip onto another wire and then push the metal bit down in the middle and fold the top over, and run the leads to the switched feed and the earth on radio loom. If ure fussy u can stick an inline fuse in but if u do it as above the fuse for the radio circuit will blow if theres a prob.
AndyWilde 04-08-2007, 05:00 PM Has anybody got a spare one of these lying round that they would be interested in selling?
darren106 04-08-2007, 05:09 PM just the insert bit?
if so i do, £5 posted
AndyWilde 05-08-2007, 08:50 AM Yes jus the insert i need as i think the spring has gone in it as it doesnt click into place and heat up
darren106 05-08-2007, 11:35 AM yeah mate. £5 posted as i have a different one in mine and took the old one out, you want a pic?
AndyWilde 05-08-2007, 01:56 PM Yeah that would be great. Cheers
Loz-106 07-08-2007, 10:45 AM i would like to no this aswell.
i have the socket thing already installed but its just a dud one theres not actually one there
Dargs 07-08-2007, 10:50 AM Ud need to take the console apart and see if the loom is there for it (would be a spare plug if there is)
If there is then ud need to salvage 1 from another 106 and replace it, wouldnt be a massive job really, and if you do give me a shout as im after a blanking plug.
Loz-106 07-08-2007, 11:28 AM theres something there but i cant seem to get my fingers behind the clips that hold it in to prize it out. i dont want to force it to much incase i do some damage to it. a cig lighter aint essential to me unless i need to charge my phone or i get a camera spy etc
Mandyyy 07-08-2007, 12:12 PM theres something there but i cant seem to get my fingers behind the clips that hold it in to prize it out. i dont want to force it to much incase i do some damage to it. a cig lighter aint essential to me unless i need to charge my phone or i get a camera spy etc

all help will be appreciated people...
Craig
mechsman 26-08-2007, 12:19 PM You need to take off the front panel that holds all the switches and the lighter in place. You should then be able to just pop the lighter out. I would get a haynes manual to help you do it.
Zippy 26-08-2007, 12:20 PM Mate, why have you done three threads for this?

Thanks Bud
:confused:Craig:D
Zippy 26-08-2007, 12:28 PM I think it you pull the heater control level thingy theres a screw behind it.
craig212 26-08-2007, 12:31 PM you mean the heater slider.... the bit that controls hot or cold air?
Zippy 26-08-2007, 12:32 PM No the switch which is labelled 1 2 3
craig212 26-08-2007, 12:39 PM oh right il go and have a play with it now n see if i can get it off, do you have to wedge a screwdriver of sumet behind the 1 2 3 switch to pop it off or is there a special way to get it off?
Zippy 26-08-2007, 12:40 PM screwdriver should do it.
Just wedge a screwdriver behind it.
Be careful mind.
Then you have to slide the two sliders into the central position and they both pull out.

1. Pull off the fan control knob and the slider levers.
2. Undo the screw behind the fan control knob.
3. Prise off the panel with the heater temp n positon pictures.
4. Undo the two screws you find behind this panel.
5. Remove your radio and radio cage.
6. You will find two more screws at the lower edge of the radio opening, remove these.
7. The whole centre panel will now come off and you will have access to the panel that the switches are mounted in.
Good luck m8

Manty_Baby 07-09-2007, 10:55 AM My pug (J reg) doesnt come with a ciggy lighter and it would make life alot easier if i could fit one, im guessing if i get one from a scrappers it shouldnt be too hard to fit? just wondering if anyone has done this on their pug ad how easy/difficult it was, and any tips would be nice.
Cheers
wilson479 07-09-2007, 11:00 AM you can buy the assemblies from somewhere like halfords or maplin.
shud be simple enough to fit
106_Andy 07-09-2007, 11:06 AM ANOTHER 1.0L WHOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO!
yeah the XN's didnt come with them but they shouldnt be too hard to wire back up. wiring might even be there...
Manty_Baby 07-09-2007, 11:20 AM ok cheers, will have a look for the assembly kit, yeah 1.0 of pure french power lol
wilson479 07-09-2007, 11:52 AM im sure you can get them from pound land too lol
they got blue led's on them :p
Mandyyy 07-09-2007, 01:56 PM this is what im attempting to do.
Haven't got around to it yet mind.
RubyTwo106 07-09-2007, 02:01 PM Yeh tell me about it! I didnt have one in my graduate it was well annoyin, not only could i not light my fags, i also couldnt charge my phone! but now rubytwo has one, had it 4 about about a month and its stopped workin! on my list of things to do at the weekend! arggggghhhhhhhhhh
Lukus 11-09-2007, 09:18 PM the wiring is there, well, theres some wiring with a form of plug on the end of it, plugged into nothing behind the blanking plate where the lighter would go!! ive been thinking about putting one in mine 2 power my sat nav when i get it, cos im terrible for getting lost!!!
mat106 11-09-2007, 09:47 PM My XN graduate came with one fitted, but removing the centre console is not terribly difficult, i might do a guide when i strip it and scrap it. All you need is either the plug if there is one or a ignition live and earth, the fuse box is behind the glove box or when i added a new one because the original broke, i used the wire that turns the amp on then it wouldn`t flatten the battery as it only works when the engine is running.
davemi16 24-09-2007, 10:19 PM i did this on my 106 diesel, it wasnt all that difficult once i discovered how to take the console off :)
ChrisD 04-10-2007, 01:32 PM I was pondering adding a second lighter socket in a less obtrusive place - cos sitting right in front of the gearstick's annoying. I keep getting the wire to my phone charger caught in my fingers when I shift gear. Dunno if there's room inside, but my rightmost button slot is unused, so I may try fitting one there. Or perhaps see if I can shove one in the glove compartment.
aruffell 10-10-2007, 12:41 PM Seemed like the right section to put this in.
My cigarette lighter and horn stopped working randomly and i found out that it was the fuse, so i attempted to replace it with another fuse but it kept shorting as soon as the fuse touched and resulted in me blowing a fuse every time.
I've tried a bigger fuse with no luck.
Any ideas guys and girls?
Cheers,
Andy
Bean0 10-10-2007, 12:42 PM Something on the circuit is causing the fuse to blow, any new one you put in will blow until you find and remedy the cause.
aruffell 10-10-2007, 12:48 PM maybe the casing is shorting on something?
how do you rip the lighter casing out?
jd157a 15-10-2007, 06:53 PM my cigarette lights doesn't work full stop, only a problem when i try and plug in the phone charger lol any light?
pug_ste 15-10-2007, 07:04 PM have u got anything jammed in the bottom of the lighter i had this prob on my gti
jd157a 17-10-2007, 02:11 AM got a link to that cig lighter?iv given up on tryin to make mine work might as well get a new one
rich106quiksilver 17-10-2007, 06:24 AM I was pondering adding a second lighter socket in a less obtrusive place - cos sitting right in front of the gearstick's annoying. I have exactly the same issue, gets annoying!
Scootymad 17-10-2007, 08:12 AM I installed my cigarette lighter yesterday, was quite easy once i had gotten through the centre console. I found its best to wire it to your head unit, at least its fused then
106EsCaPaDe 26-10-2007, 11:05 AM wired myself a ciggy lighter today, piece of cake considering wires are oushed toside wraped in insulation
Matt15 25-12-2007, 09:11 PM For Christmas i got and mini hoover and a tyre pump from my nan, but the only problem is that you have to use the cigarette lighter to work them and my car dont have one !so im guna have to get one in my car quick, before she see's. If shes see's that i dont have one she'll be heartbroken !so i need a guide on how to install one into my car, im pretty sure i can pick one up from the scrappy but i dont have a clue how to fit it.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2461/spa2206en8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Im guessing i can just put it into one of the dummy button near the hazards and that, but where would i go from there ?
Cheers for any help !
carl_xsi 25-12-2007, 11:54 PM go to halfords they have a kit you can buy, it comes with instructions.
titch 26-12-2007, 12:02 AM Err, this shouldn't be posted in this section mate, this is just for the guides, sorry :)
Im sure Joe will be along and let you know ;) lol.
doely_gti 26-12-2007, 12:07 AM get one from the scrappy, take the plastic blank out

Isn't too bad to do from what i gather. as doely said, rip that spare button off. install a kit from halfords or ebay which cost less than £5 and you need 2 wires and a clip on each end from the battery to the back of the lighter and from the back of it to the other side of the battery, +ve and -ve.
If you ask nicely the halfords guy may even fit it for you for a few quid.
good luck, let us know how it goes
Matt15 27-12-2007, 07:08 PM Cheers guys !
sorry about the wrong thread :/
ill update when its done !
thanks
feelion 30-12-2007, 05:58 PM i dont have one in my wee beastie and looking to install one (not for the lighter, but to use the socket for chargin phones, etc!)
would this be what im looking at buying?
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=1055&doy=30m12#overview
thanks :)
RallyeDan 30-12-2007, 06:09 PM ive got a proper peugeot one int garage;)
feelion 30-12-2007, 06:15 PM have you indeed... and how much would you be sellin that for? :)
RallyeDan 30-12-2007, 06:19 PM well i'll have a look tomorrow, its still atached to the dash facia. You need to check if the wiring is there behind the dash first though. It should be;)
feelion 30-12-2007, 06:27 PM i can check that tomorrow :)
Wizza 30-12-2007, 09:49 PM I have mine somewere... I don't have a clue whether that Maplin one is correct or not... I'm unsure about th wiring behind either... It should be there in my opinion!!!
jimbotrs 01-01-2008, 06:04 PM I bought that very thing from Maplin a while ago.. it didn't fit very well into the vacant lighter socket on my car, although yours might be different. I also had no wiring behind.. I think the car used to have a lighter socket but the prat who owned it before had it removed completely because he didn't smoke. Annoying, as I could have used it for power. Haven't got round to fitting it yet, seems a bit tricky as I'm a bit of a novice.
That maplin connector is more of an inline jobbie (use like a floating lead on the end of a wire) what you really want for the fascia mounted socket is a flush one. Maplin used to stock them (got mine beginning of last year) but now showing as no longer stocked. Ebay is your friend though http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marine-Flush-Fit-12V-to-24V-Socket-Back-Fitting-NEW_W0QQitemZ330201180101QQihZ014QQcategoryZ15263Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Took a bit of cutting and adjusting the bevel on it to fit nicely but did fit after a bit of fiddling and looked quite good.
Wiring of it if you haven't got existing wiring could be tricky if you're unsure of how to go about it.
If I still had the old car (N Reg 106 Escapade) i'd nip out and take some piccies - but I havent so I can't! Basically I took a live feed from the control for the heater motor (with a suitable inline fuse on the sur to the socket) and then took the earth back to an earthing point just on the inside of the passanger doorframe. Can't remember what coulour wire the heater control live was but the haynes manual should tell you...
Took me about an hour or so to fit and wire... then I got a bit crazy and added a hidden pair of socets under the steering wheel for plugging in of sat nav wire that run under door seal runner to dash on drivers side!
Hope this helps...
Chris
Scootymad 02-01-2008, 07:54 PM You can buy a £5 socket from halfords, then all you need is 2 short lengths of wire.
Connect the live to the lighter and then use a wire crimp to connect into the live of your head unit, then with the earth... earth to earth wire on head unit.
5 minute jobby
the wiring on s1 looms is a bit hit and miss as to if something else is there or not.
yet on s2's you have allsorts already there, like electric window and central locking wirning
M***xvg 02-01-2008, 09:55 PM i fitted one in mine, i went to the scrappy to get get something which i cant remember but i skanked the socket out of a s2 106 and it fitted in mine fine, the wiring is there, its pushed into a plastic clip. u will need to pull the clip off with a struggle and the wire plugged straight into the socket asif it was ment to be fitted, the only thing was there isnt another lil wire so it lights up orange around it but in sure you will find the socket lol. just get a socket from another 106 and it will fit with no problems. also its always live so dont leave anything plugged in or you will have a dead battery.
106EsCaPaDe 03-01-2008, 12:44 AM My wiring was just hiding at very back covered in insulation foam, plug and play tbh
the_love_wagon 08-01-2008, 11:18 PM just to let u no fella tat its the bigger slot were the cig lighter goes. all the wirings there you just need so wire and u can use so spade connecters (the ones u use for speakers cant remmber if tats there real name lol) get a alsorted box of connecters from halfords with a cig lighter u have 2 earth the light. be careful putting it in coz i almost cracked mine lol u can just push it in.under the ash tray theres a hole which will help getting it in. the other hole is for fog lights i think
louisehb69 09-01-2008, 09:15 AM Hi guys,
Hope you are all well and had a good xmas and new year?
I was wondering if anyone had any tips for fitting a ciggy lighter? I really need it for my sat nav.
Tha problem that iv got is i cant get the cover off the hole to fit it in and i really dont have a clue about wiring it all up
Please help this stupid blonde bimbo :D
rob_s 09-01-2008, 09:18 AM to get the cover off,you need to remove the center console, and it slips out from the back
as for wireing it up,ud need to find a live,or even wire it direct to the battery
tbh id leave it to a garage ;)
welcome to 106o!
Lacey 09-01-2008, 09:41 AM I've changed the title. You may get more replies if you state what you need help with in the title.
