I fitted a pair of em to my car cos i had none to start with. 1 lives in the glovebox with the satnav cable plugged in to it. The other lives in the dash (not in the proper hole tho) so I can plug in anything else I need to. I got a ripspeed one from halfords that had the male part on one end and two female sockets, each on a seperate cable on the other. Both sockets are scotch locked into the radios power and earth wires. No probs as of yet and its a switched feed as well. The pugs that have a socket aslo run off the radio circuit so not overloading it.

Forgive me my ignorance, the most I've done with a fuse box is change a blown fuse.

It all sounds simple enough, but is there any technique to hooking the lighter unit up to the fuse-box. Do the wires clip in to the back of fuse-box or do they need soldering? For that matter, does the fuse-box come off easy to gain access to it?

Also I have some neon lights I was looking to put in, can they be run off the same fuse, obviously as long as the fuse is capable of handling both.

Non-runner hooking it up to the radio as radio was stolen before I got the car, and the wires there are a complete mess.

25-06-2007, 05:50 PM
id just cut the plug off the end and hard wire it to a ignition switched live and an put the - to the body of the car, if i was going to be fussy id stick an in-line fuse on the live :)

southendshaggy
25-06-2007, 05:58 PM
Dont forget if you want the cig lighter to be illuminated theres a 3rd wire to think about

liaminllan
25-06-2007, 06:10 PM
the 3 wires will be earth, live, switch live, you take a live from a 12v supply that is constant, switch live from the switched live for the lights(dash or headlights ect) and then earth is the body of the car, the switch live will be for the light if there is one on the aftermarket sockets.

Just get two scotch locks, which are those blue or red things that u put a wire into and then clip onto another wire and then push the metal bit down in the middle and fold the top over, and run the leads to the switched feed and the earth on radio loom. If ure fussy u can stick an inline fuse in but if u do it as above the fuse for the radio circuit will blow if theres a prob.

Ud need to take the console apart and see if the loom is there for it (would be a spare plug if there is)

If there is then ud need to salvage 1 from another 106 and replace it, wouldnt be a massive job really, and if you do give me a shout as im after a blanking plug.

You need to take off the front panel that holds all the switches and the lighter in place. You should then be able to just pop the lighter out. I would get a haynes manual to help you do it.

Just wedge a screwdriver behind it.

Be careful mind.

Then you have to slide the two sliders into the central position and they both pull out.

11-09-2007, 09:47 PM
My XN graduate came with one fitted, but removing the centre console is not terribly difficult, i might do a guide when i strip it and scrap it. All you need is either the plug if there is one or a ignition live and earth, the fuse box is behind the glove box or when i added a new one because the original broke, i used the wire that turns the amp on then it wouldn`t flatten the battery as it only works when the engine is running.

I was pondering adding a second lighter socket in a less obtrusive place - cos sitting right in front of the gearstick's annoying. I keep getting the wire to my phone charger caught in my fingers when I shift gear. Dunno if there's room inside, but my rightmost button slot is unused, so I may try fitting one there. Or perhaps see if I can shove one in the glove compartment.

Seemed like the right section to put this in.

My cigarette lighter and horn stopped working randomly and i found out that it was the fuse, so i attempted to replace it with another fuse but it kept shorting as soon as the fuse touched and resulted in me blowing a fuse every time.

I've tried a bigger fuse with no luck.

Any ideas guys and girls?

Cheers,

Andy

Something on the circuit is causing the fuse to blow, any new one you put in will blow until you find and remedy the cause.

As for the cig lighter, these threads cover it as its been done before a few times;

Isn't too bad to do from what i gather. as doely said, rip that spare button off. install a kit from halfords or ebay which cost less than £5 and you need 2 wires and a clip on each end from the battery to the back of the lighter and from the back of it to the other side of the battery, +ve and -ve.
If you ask nicely the halfords guy may even fit it for you for a few quid.

good luck, let us know how it goes

I bought that very thing from Maplin a while ago.. it didn't fit very well into the vacant lighter socket on my car, although yours might be different. I also had no wiring behind.. I think the car used to have a lighter socket but the prat who owned it before had it removed completely because he didn't smoke. Annoying, as I could have used it for power. Haven't got round to fitting it yet, seems a bit tricky as I'm a bit of a novice.

neff
02-01-2008, 07:22 PM
That maplin connector is more of an inline jobbie (use like a floating lead on the end of a wire) what you really want for the fascia mounted socket is a flush one. Maplin used to stock them (got mine beginning of last year) but now showing as no longer stocked. Ebay is your friend though http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marine-Flush-Fit-12V-to-24V-Socket-Back-Fitting-NEW_W0QQitemZ330201180101QQihZ014QQcategoryZ15263Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Took a bit of cutting and adjusting the bevel on it to fit nicely but did fit after a bit of fiddling and looked quite good.

Wiring of it if you haven't got existing wiring could be tricky if you're unsure of how to go about it.

If I still had the old car (N Reg 106 Escapade) i'd nip out and take some piccies - but I havent so I can't! Basically I took a live feed from the control for the heater motor (with a suitable inline fuse on the sur to the socket) and then took the earth back to an earthing point just on the inside of the passanger doorframe. Can't remember what coulour wire the heater control live was but the haynes manual should tell you...

Took me about an hour or so to fit and wire... then I got a bit crazy and added a hidden pair of socets under the steering wheel for plugging in of sat nav wire that run under door seal runner to dash on drivers side!

Hope this helps...

Chris

You can buy a £5 socket from halfords, then all you need is 2 short lengths of wire.

Connect the live to the lighter and then use a wire crimp to connect into the live of your head unit, then with the earth... earth to earth wire on head unit.

i fitted one in mine, i went to the scrappy to get get something which i cant remember but i skanked the socket out of a s2 106 and it fitted in mine fine, the wiring is there, its pushed into a plastic clip. u will need to pull the clip off with a struggle and the wire plugged straight into the socket asif it was ment to be fitted, the only thing was there isnt another lil wire so it lights up orange around it but in sure you will find the socket lol. just get a socket from another 106 and it will fit with no problems. also its always live so dont leave anything plugged in or you will have a dead battery.

to get the cover off,you need to remove the center console, and it slips out from the back

as for wireing it up,ud need to find a live,or even wire it direct to the battery

tbh id leave it to a garage ;)
