Looking to buy a spare engine to rebuild and swap into my GTi, but having trouble finding a decent 106 GTi ot Saxo VTS engine, is the TU5JP4 from the C2VTS/206 XSi a direct swap? if so is it worth getting one of these, as they are more readily available (206 versions) and lower mileages.
TU5JP4 is 16v
TU5JP is the vtr engine

o rite, i thought mine was the tu5jp and the later version was the tu5jp4 lol, nevermind, must be mistaken. So is there a difference between my current 16v engine and the later C2 VTS/206 XSi engines? the only differences i can see is that the 206xsi is listed as 110bhp standard, i asume it would be the same in tuning as my current engine?

anybody offer up any help? looking to maybe get a new engine hopefully when i get paid on monday
Ive heard people talk of a hybrid of the two.
GTi/VTS bottom end and the c2 head as it houses bigger valves.
People also mention putting the gti cams inside the big valve head as theyre slightly wilder.

I think the newer TU5JP4 (C2 VTS/206 XSI) engine is slightly more restricted due to emission regulations etc. which is why it is only down as 110bhp but it comes with bigger valves as standard over the older TU5J4 (Saxo VTS/106 GTI).
Think those are the right engine codes.

yea i have heard this too, well i plan to rebuild the spare engine i pick up, so it will either be a complete C2/206 engine or a complete gti/vts engine, have not really seen may parts of angines for sale, such as bottom ends or heads seperatelt, especially the C2 ones. Would the 206 XSi head be the same as the C2 vts one? as i can find quite a few 206 1.6 16v engines for sale on ebay, and am quite tempted to buy one as they come with lower miles than i can find gti/vts engines, and obviously newer too, and cheaper as the arent the "top model" engine whereas the gti/vts are and so ask a higher price
If you use the C2 head you want to use gti/vts valve springs. The c2 ones are soooft.

I'd say go for the newer C2/206 engine and swap parts over from the old GTI engine get the best of both that way.

would tuning the newer tu5jp4 be the same as my engine now? If things go to plan i shall be modifying the engine before it gets fitted into my car anyway

yea i plan to cam it anyway, still unsure about boost yet lol, really tempted to build it up over time to be a supercharged unit to then be fitted into my car, if funds allow i'd love to do this, but need to research what sort of cams and mods would be best to do/use so i can sort most of it with the engine out of the car

so would modifications to it be the same, i'm assuming that seeing as its basically the same engine i could buy modifications for a 106 gti engine and they would fit? or would some mods require me to buy them to be engine specific?

Providing you use the cams, springs, inlet, exhaust system, and ECU from the GTI then I reckon you'd get similar power out put to what you had on the GTI engine.

would the ECU not be different? being newer would it not be the 3 plug ECU? as i believe mine is the single plug being a 1997 model

Yer the ECUs will be different, you'll have to use the new one if yours isn't a 3 plug but I'm guessing the newer engine will have a different set up for emissions purposes which probably hampers performance a bit which is why I was saying use the older one.
Anyway if you're talking about charging it you'll probably end up using a standalone or getting it remapped so wont be an issue. If not get a 3 plug of a newer GTI to use with it but that might be hassle.

yea the plan would be supercharging or at least cams etc, so it would need a remap so i'll either have the standard ECU remapped or for the charger i'd get a standalone to replace it.
Have just been browsing at the Plug and Play VEMS on DP Engineering site, says its for 106 gti or saxo vts TU5J4, doesnt say anything about the P version of the newer engines so will have to enquire about that if i go down that route, as I guess that would make things easier having it to plug and play then all thats required is just to tune it to the cars spec.
