port and polish the ports, skim the head a bit or get high comp pistons and a bigger cam

get a ignition only ecu and have the spark mapped for exactly the optimum. Will improve response and mpg may be slightly better to. They do high comp pistons for the 1.4 and 1.6 so thats a choice to, but if you go for this have a look at what cam you are going for because if you are going for a more mental cam then you may need to look into which pistons you get as valve to piston clearance will be a tight one, poss valve cutouts will be needed if cam is going to be mental.
Engine is going to be apart maybe have the bottom end dynamically balanced? Id have a word with Sandy as he recently did a 1.4 on twin 40s that made 148bhp!

lairier cams, standalone ecu, ported, polished, skimmed big valve head, remap
after that it starts getting expensive by changing internals or forced induction.

james dont the 1.4 xsi run a dome top and the gti dont so would it be a down mod compression wise to fit gti pistons??
