i recently topped up my rad but made the mistake of doing so when the engine was hot and got an air lock in the system,i drained the coolent out and re filled in an attempt to get rid of the air lock which it seemed to work, although the water temp does still rise high before the fan kicks in and the temp drops to normal but now the oil temp gauge is sky high and overheating ive tried changing the oil but it still the same.its a 2001 106 gti and any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I got roughly the same problem,
I got a 106 Mardi Gras 1994, 1.0, and it overheats, was cuz i had a hole in one of the pipes but fixed that and now it still overheats. Don't think the water is going round properly so tomorrow im taking out the thermostat and going to letit run and see if it goes through, Likes to overheat after like 2 minutes of driving for some reason :)
Think there is still air in my system, im not very good at all with cars, but if i figure out my problem, i'll post it here and it (MIGHT) but very unlikely be the solution to yours, just worth a try though eh? lol.

There should be a bleed valve on the pipe going from the rear of the engine to the heater matrix. Have you tried that?

i took the pipe of on the right hand side and poured water straight in until it was coming out then quickly put the pipe back on filled up the water bottle and started the car for about 10 secs to let the water flow around then kept toping it up until it was blead. i would recommend some flush thou to flush the rad because the pugs and saxos always get clogged up badly i find.
also its worth checking the thermostat because they can get clogged and they can get stuck closed.

hope this was a help to you

yh put ur thermostat in some boiling water and pull it out after like a minute and it should be open, if not, get a new one, only costs like £6 or less :)

Before replacing anything test the water pump and thermostat are not broken first.
Check the pump by filling the radiator expansion tube to the brim and then rev the engin, you should see the water level drop and then go back up when you ease the revs....
to check the thermostat, disconect the fan. do this via the fuse box. usually the top right corner fuse (30Amp) and let the engine heat up and you should feel the thermostat valve open. this way you can determin weather either of the two is not working corectly.
aside from this it could just be that the temperature sensor is broken and showing that the car thinks it is overheating when it actually isnt. test this by disconecting the sensor. note that there are two sensors on some models, and just one on the others - one which appies the fan and the other to display the temperature inside the car... It may just be one of these which is broken and making the car think it is overheating when not. leave the engine running for a bit and if the fan comes on quickly feel the heat of the water and it is still quite cool, would feel warm to hot, then sensor is broken, not pump or thermostat.
