View Full Version : Question It's Only a Spark Plug, Right?

I've had some trouble with my car over the last couple weeks, which I think may be due to a dodgey spark plug. So, i'm replacing them.
The issue is, I found some spark plugs on DemonTeaks which were really expensive; Denso Iridium Power Spark Plugs. They are 15 quid EACH. Found them cheaper elswhere at 10 each, but still considerably dearer (3 or 4 times dearer) than your usual Champion/Bosch/NGK spark plugs. Just wondered could it possibly be worth the extra money, coz after all, it's only spark plugs! Surely can't make such difference surely??

To be honest, I don't think you're going to see +10bhp because you've got some spark plugs that cost £15 each. It's a bit like all these different HDMI cables for your PS2, HD TV, DVD etc. At the end of the day, they're cables no matter if they cost £20 or £120. I doubt very much you're going to notice a difference.
Walk down to your local motor factors and buy some NGK plugs at a good price and save on postage :)
Edit: But I'm no expert...

i found some for about 35 quid delivered, so why not. lol. it's things like that, which is why i end up spending so much money on cars without realising it (and not an awful lot to show for it) lol

They dont do anything at all
I always use NGK plugs simply because thats what Pug recommend and fit to the gti as standard :)

^Also the reason, after reading/hearing a few different things about Bosch Super4's, why i've got a set of Super4s and NGK plugs sat here now. And there was very nearly a new set of HT leads as well.

I'd heard they dont run well. But if its what he uses, and has done, then cant hurt to get a set cheaper can it?

not keen on the Denso's, the electrode is quite small and on occasion have broken off..
Also there have been reliability problems with the ceramic cracking on occasion.
The irridium plugs have (funnily enough!) an irridium core which is highly conductive (more so than standard plugs) and can produce a stronger spark. Irridium however is a tad expensive! Plugs are only as good as the HT leads supplying the load. I used magnicore competition leads inconjunction with NGK irridium plugs on my scooby.

Fishfire what does your scooby look like? Do you ever come down onto Hayling Island?

Ive heard about them causing misfires, I believe that was Sandy who reported that at one point.
Ive also heard about one of the electrodes snapping, and being fired into the cylinder.
Chances are it'd never happen, but after hearing about the random misfires id rather use NGK's which i've only heard good reviews about.
If you're using Super4s, fair enough, Id presume you've not had problems from em, but I cba changing em, to change em back again. :)

NGK plugs all the way - but I was very suprised to find that swapping from twin electrode to singles HAS made a difference on my 1.1, I've never bothered with them before but since putting plain ones in there is now a noticable lag on acceleration which wasn't there on the twins (both sets NGK: plain are BKR6EY and twins are BKR6EK).
Now there is absolutely no difference in power output of the engine no matter what plugs you use, It's all about how the plugs perform, seems that the twins are able to fire better than the plains for some reason.
NGK plugs aren't infallible either - a lad at work had the ground electrode break off in his Astra and destroy a Cylinder Head, I've had a few at work that have simply shattered - but these are Extremely rare cases, I deal with a LOT of spark plugs!
In conclusion go with NGKs, Bosch plugs are poor quality as are Champion.

Atm im running Ngk iridium's they was around £37(inc vat) now i wouldn't say they've made a huge difference but they do make a difference and another plus side is they last forever, so 37 quid might seem dear but you dont buy them as often. hope this helps. pete
