To those of you that are not wanting to VTR of VTS and want to keep to a 1.4.

If you want to keep below 1.6 litres for tax reasons like I do, then either find an XSI or 1.3 rallye engine and fit that. Instant 100bhp, just the issue of rewiring needed.

You can also fit any sporty 1.4 head to the quiksilver block so Rallye, XSi, VTR, AX GTi, this will be like having a cheap breathed upon head.

Inlet now you will need either an ealry silvertop VTR one or later one depending on what port spacing head you have and type of ecu. S1 ralyle inlets will fit early quiksilvers up to some V reg cars.

ECU wise if you can or do the rewiring needed then get a 1.4 XSi or 1.3 rallye loom and ecu, both have the higher 7250rpm rev limit and have 100bhp as standard combine this with the above heads or inlets.

As an example of all the above made to good use the spec of my quiksilver engine before rebuild was

S1 rallye head
VTR inlet and TB
Miltek 4-2-1
OMP cat back group N exhaust system
206 simota
AX GTi loom and ecu

the above made 110.8bhp @ 7285rpm, would have made more but the rev limit was to low and the graph was still climbing when it hit the limiter.

Now you think well all that work I may aswell frop the whole engine in, but with that setup at the pod I didnt have to many troubles with S1 rallyes running the usual breathing mods ie manifold, xhaust and induction kit. VTRs are easier to pull away from and pass, I am not saying it will slay everything in its path as no 2 cars have the same mods or are the same from the factory

New engine to go in the car will be the same but the bottom end will be using S1 rallye pistons and running on standalone ecu and Yamaha R6 throttle bodies

You do have to think about it this way though, if fitting a bigger engine declare it because if you are doing the usual insure it as a 1.6 but tax it as a 1.4 you are cheating yourselves and insurance is effectively void if you get caught which is very high now with the amount of random spot checks.

For the extra £60 or so a year extra you pay are the roads getting any better? or are roads even getting repaired? Do the above mods keep to a mutant 1.4 pay cheap road tax still have plenty of fun ont he same shit roads!!

Some nice advice there, plus its nice to have a car that shocks its standard brothers !

110 bhp is incredible really, was that all mapped up or str8 plug n play?

Good stuff Gina G

Got confused where you said 'You can also fit any sporty 1.4 head to the quiksilver block so Rallye, XSi, VTR, AX GTi, this will be like having a cheap breathed upon head.'

Sorry about the dumb n00b question but what is a head, where can i get a sporty one, and is it easy to fit?

Told ya it was a dumb question lol

Was not mapped at all just running on the ax gti ecu map which ran the engine fine no problems, no flat spots or overfuelling issues.

Best get a CAT XSi loom end ecu though no messing about adjusting the fuel mixture manually then on pre cat ecus. Or even better the 1.3 rallye loom and ecu.

Head as in the thing the cam sits in the top half of the engine!! Basically look o rallye register and ebay for the parts. Injectors you will need the ones that go with the head.

really good advice there mate.

so i could have a VTR head.. then would need the ECU, loom, inlet manifold and TB..?

and it should run fine. no over fueling etc.

then combined with a cam, i should have a nice 1.4...??

Basically any of the heads mentioned, get the inlet, loom and ecu of a 1.3 rallye or 1.4 XSi then bolt together wire it all up and off you go.

If doing just the head swap then make sure you get the right injectors as Barra87 Dave Barra did a VTR conversion but had overfuellign issues when he used the VTR injector but got furio / quiky injector off the smae year head and now it is fine again

So after remap would u have improved figures? Or just bit better response and running?

If you remapped the XSi or rallye ecu after you have done the mods you will get better bhp and torque, respone and running.

The reason you run the XSi or S1 ECU as is no remap is because it will run the engine safely until you decide to do so, not essential as when I had the above spec I didn't have any fuelling or running issues

ah is ill prob use VTR as it will be the easiest to get hold and my mates got a scrap yard lol... so i should have many problems with getting/fitting it. ;)
