I read somewhere that uprating your CAMS is a great way to improve your motor.

I don't really know much about them, so what are they and whats the deal with uprating them for improvement?

Thanks

Cams are your camshafts.

They control the valves which let in/out air and gasses, high lift cams, keep the the valves open for longer to allow more oxygen in the cylinders to combust.

Thus creating bigger explosion and more power.

A remap of your ecu is recomended to adjust the fuel accordingly.

Hope this helps.

cams/ camshafts open the valves allowing air/fuel in or exhaust guases out.

uprating cams gives them a longer duration ( time the valves are open) and lift ( distance the valves open) and a few other things along with them.

now if you alow the valves to be open for longer thet will allow more air/fuel in or more exhaust gasses out. the more you can get in/out in the set period of time gives a better burn = more power.

after a certian duration you'l need to get a remap, but you can buy cams that don't need one. although id recomend getting a remap with any uprated cams to see the full potential.

after a certian amount of lift you will need to get grooved pistons to prevent the valves hitting the pistons, but this is only needed with really wild cams.

theres a number of diffrent manufacturers of cams all with diffrent 'grades' of cams

which one you choose is down to personal prefferance/budget

hope that helps :)

EDIT - damn you seph! lol

you can get your current cams reprofiled and fitted for about 300 quid

But reprofile cams only alter the duration, not the lift.

You need to have a longer duration and more lift to make the big improovements.
