Owned this car for a week now and thought it would be good to start one of these, as i hope to do alot to the car inpreparation for the summer!
I'd been driving the mardi gras for a grand total of 5 months, and had the worst luck with it! A neighbour went into the front wing, a mate bashed the door in, and another mate managed to take out a concrete lampost with the boot :D. Combined with a crunchy 4 speed box and crap paint, i felt it was time for a change.
So, with the £600 odd i had from the damages to my old car, i saw and bought this: an s1 XS, 1.4 8v, with a years MOT and 6 months tax for £625.

Not bad deal, i don't think. A few dents but these can be sorted.
I bought it a week ago, since Ive put my xsi interior in, a decent stereo system from my old car and my xsi leather steering wheel. Ive also put on pug OEM central locking, all nicked from the mardi gras. Pictures to follow.
Comments? :p

love the xs mate had mine 2 years just sold it last month 2 fund my xsi great cars take care

cheers mate, they seem to be quite rare. hoping to make it as xsi like as possible, minus the engine and high insurance.
xsi's aint too bad on insurance, first thing i'd say is upgrade the brakes. their dire!
exhaust is probs quite restrictive, same with standard airbox set up. should be an esay engine to put on carbs too.
if you want cheap power, i noticed on myums xs that tthe downpipe is sort of squashed in a bit at the bottom by the exhaust join. they've decreased the diameter of it a fair bit. so i'm pretty sure that xsi ones arent like that and are the same diameter all the way thru. might be woth a look see

Nice to see another s1 XS about. Uprated my brakes with tar.ox discs and pads a while back and i felt much happier. got some 206 gti front brakes and gti rear axle going on soon tho!
povall_666
09-04-2008, 09:06 PM
the brakes on this really arent as bad as my 1.1! But if any serious power comes out of her i think ill have to be upgrading!
firsth thing im doing to the car is having it lowered. and sorting the bodywork out. the boot doesnt sit flush, and ive since found a crease in the boot floor, so its never going to. a shame bt its not the end of the world. the bonnet needs adjusting and the door and rear wing need knocking out.
then hopefully some sort of good exhaust system, and i want to know if i can put it on uprated carbs. its single point injection atm.
cheers aidy, will have a look at that downpipe.

Quick update- got all my central locking sorted, including the boot. Anyone thats fed a wire under the headling and into the tailgate, and through to the motor will appreciate how much of a bastard it is to do! Hands are all cut up, nearly smashed the window in my rages haha
Also got half my xsi trim fitted (need a new window-seal lip for the other side).

Sorry about crap pics. Will post more pics when its all done. Really really happy with it :D
Next step is lowering, when the arsehole that owes me money for reversing my old car into a lampost pays up. If he ever does.
Will i need new shocks if i go 60mm? It is an old car...but i dnt have that much money?

Gotta love the S1's! I'm on my second one! You got a tidy motor there! Got mine for £750 was abit gutted that I spent all that and then within a week had to replace gearbox bearings for £350! doh! Also paint job on mine is shite! Gotta get it resprayed. My pugs having a french 4 months not just the odd day, lol.

Right fitted all the interior and bits- got a gti geargaiter for free haha love scrappys :D
Gave it a good clean n back to black etc, and stuck on those all important stickers haha
Need to start properly doing stuff next, think first thing is to lower it, then a good cat back exhaust, dunno which tho. i want to sort out the dents as well, the passenger door is a bit crumpled and drivers rear arch is bent in.

Hardly a massive update, but adjusted valve clearances the other day. Car runs a lot quieter, the ticking was really doin my head in.
Cheers to cknotty for the DIY guide. :D repppedddd
Got a bit ocd while i was at it and cleaned the oil baffle plate till it was shiney aluminium again lol. The oil needs a change and i thought while the rocker cover was off may as well remove as much sludge as i can. The cover is being painted next week, duno what colour.

yeh it does look good. i agree. haha angle the washer jet to spray ur mates behind...
wher can i get the bung to do it? i think uve just convinced me ;)
lol im not 100% about this but mine was in my car lol , if you look under the rear seats there will be a little bung that fits perfect mate
povall_666
05-05-2008, 04:05 PM
i know which one u mean- didnt know that fitted! doesnt leak or nethin? if so i cn do it tonite.
Its more in the boot than under the seats.
Not very secure either that way, so i had the idea of pushing a pin through the bung as close to the window as possible so that it wouldnt be pulled out ;]
povall_666
05-05-2008, 04:13 PM
cheers mate, its good as a temp fix at least until i buy one from pug?
pug have stoped doing them .... mine was a nice fit moved a little but doesnt leak at all :)
Pug have stopped producing them now.
Tbh, Think you'd be lucky to find a proper one nowadays.
A pin through the bung is more than secure enough for me :)
povall_666
05-05-2008, 04:46 PM
did it, took like 4 mins? haha looks a hell of alot cleaner. but dont have that bung you were talking about? the one i do have is too big? anyone got a clear pic of which one im looking for and where?

Stiney106XT
06-05-2008, 05:37 PM
Yeah I got mine from Halfords too. I also used some sillicone sealant stuff just to make sure it doesnt leak!
povall_666
06-05-2008, 05:45 PM
haha will do, cheers! just got a pack of bungs, 19mm, 22mm, 24mm. dont need two of them but thts hw they come lol pointless.
Stiney106XT
06-05-2008, 06:05 PM
I know, lol. Thats what I got too. Think the leftover ones are floating about in my boot somewhere still, lol.
povall_666
06-05-2008, 06:07 PM
did the middle sized one fit nicely? the 22mm. i cnt reli get it in that easily?
Stiney106XT
06-05-2008, 06:19 PM
I remember it taking abit of force and a knife to get the thing in. because the others were too big or too small.
povall_666
07-05-2008, 08:58 PM
Got the grommet in for the de wipering. £1.49 from halfords with two extra uneeded ones, and it fits perfectly :) thnks to max for convincing me to do it lol
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d143/povall_666/DSC00194.jpg

07-05-2008, 10:34 PM

Update. Car is looking a nice old state atm hasnt been cleaned for 2 weeks, and the inside is even worse :p But thats only cos ive been transporting wheels and messin with electrics.
Fitted a better roof console so now my oem central locking is remote :) and i have a map light haha mod cons..
http://i26.tinypic.com/bdtgy9.jpg
Got a free gti leather gearknob from the scrappy, glued it on as it didnt stay put. Excuse the mess.lol
http://i29.tinypic.com/90sfa1.jpg
s2 smoked repeaters courtesy of JonB (cheers matey :)) , holes filed to fit and metal painted so it doesnt rust.

http://i32.tinypic.com/b54luf.jpg
Removed wheels and rolling on steelies ;) haha what a mess.
http://i32.tinypic.com/a44v36.jpg
Dont know what colour to paint mine yet, im thinking anthracite.
http://i32.tinypic.com/2gts17c.jpg
And a quick question- is it worth having new tyres put on before i spray them, so the tyre fitters dont mess the diy sprayjob up?
And the sticker that has got my mates taking the piss, although i like it.

20-06-2008, 10:24 PM
new update, might get some comments this time! :)
Was my 18th on Tuesday, got a few bits. Quickshift, supersprint full system, personalised plate :):) and some good halfords pro tools (the big set). As you can guess im pretty chuffed!
Fitted the quickshift (courtesy of my girlfriends mum ;)), easy and so so so cool to drive with.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d143/povall_666/DSC00249.jpg
And the supersprint. Needed a few new bolts from pug and a new gasket, but easy to fit and the sound is porn :D. A lot lighter as well.

Only thing i dont like is that it sticks out a bit far and its tbh a lot more peashooter like than i expected. But oh well, why be chavy with my 4" japcan, break the mold haha ;)
Oh and a taste of whats to come....
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d143/povall_666/DSC00253.jpg
Let me know what you all think, i'll update with a vid of the exhaust soon.
And im looking for cherry red doors and xsi bumper. PM me. Cheers.

White wheels look very tidy mate, should look good on the car. Get some high temp paint for the calipers so they show up through the gap in the wheels.
Might have to get myself a quickshift and new linkages when i get the xs back on the road!
What you got planned next? Get it lowered?
mate this is going to be luushhh :D :D :D

can you get mr's for s1 cars? Has anyone had any custom made?
KustomX
17-07-2008, 11:10 AM
mate your car looks very nice...only thing i would change is that back bumper...put an XSI one then slam it!!!!! It will look gorgeous!!!!
povall_666
17-07-2008, 11:21 AM
cheers yeh looking for an xsi bumper and xsi doors.
If your putting an xsi bumper on it you may aswell fit the arches aswell otherwise it will look odd as the xsi bumper is cut to fit the round arch. Also a bigger supersprint would look sweet on it ;)
povall_666
17-07-2008, 08:16 PM
arches will also come, yes mate. Im hoping to find red xsi wings with the arches still on them, as mine r dented neways :) haha maybe mate, maybe :p

Haven't posted here for a long time! University and moving out have taken up a lot of time and money! But now i'm settled, the car will become a priority again.
I'm planning an xsi conversion sometime next year, but will only do that if i can get the bodywork looking as i please. Its a bit denty, ill-fitting in places and faded. So any cherry red parts going, please let me know!
The car is solid and i've become too attached to buy another and start from scratch again. After the body work, some electrical updating, brake upgrade and some sound-proofing before the engine conversion :) :)
Here's the car as it is now:
