View Full Version : Broken seized bleed nipples
Well my car's been off the road since xmas eve :(. Reason behind it was that my brakes stopped working on my car (all the way to the floor, hardly any brakage). Because after i topped up my resovoir nothing changed it was assumed to be the master cylinder which was replaced.
However, before that my handbreak light was coming on and i just thought it was something wrong with the handbreak sensor, however it turns out that means the brake fluid level is low aswell and i got air into the system. This was after the master cyclinder was replaced that i realised this. It does however, look like the fluid leaked out through the seals on the master cyclinder as there was fluid on the servo.
Anywho, after the master cyclinder was replaced i started to slacken off the bleed nipples getting ready to bleed the system (two man method), they were completley seized. Started off on the driver's side and the bleed nipple snapped off, i then tried the passenger side and the same happened again :(. So now my calipers off the remainder of the bleed nipple is stuck inside the caliper, my dads been trying to get it out and it wont budge. Looks like im going to need new calipers :(.
Any advice before the nipples on the rear drums are tackled?
If you can't remove the nipples without drilling/effecting the thread then new calipers are required. I had same problem with seized nipples and thought i'd be able to drill and re-tap but as i was advised at work, the end of the thread is tapered within the caliper to lock it off/like a tap with the fluid.
Mayaswell grab some gti calipers ?
Ok, well new nipps have been ordered that are 8mm (instead of 7mm). My dad managed to get the rear drums loosened no problem.
Gti calipers on 1.1 discs? :S

Gti calipers on 1.1 discs? :S
Discs are cheap ;)
Let me know how the drilling goes, if it still seals ect..

fook trying to drill them! i think a normal drill bit would mess up the bottom cs as said they are tapered at the bottom.

calipers are only a 5er from breakers. make sure u check the bleed nipple aint seszed on the ones from there. :)
It actually sealed fine, it was tapped to 8mm but the thread was dodgey, so dodgey in fact it fucking stripped. Going to re-tap to 10mm with a much nice thread. So near yet so far! Was just finishing bleeding :(
Yes both the nipples were drilled out of the front calipers.

Sorry, I know its a bit late but heat always helps when loosening bleed nipples! (And a good fitting socket or spanner)

You don't always need the bleed nipple on the caliper to bleed the brakes, I recently got a rear axle (Second hand) And on both calipers the bleed nipple was seized, The axle must have been left outside for a while as when I picked it up it was not in a shed or anything and the back discs where fucked with rust, so I bought new discs and pads allround, My cousin used heat to try unsieze with some sort of blow torch thing that was attached to a big gas canister, Basicaly he could not get them unsiezed so he bled the brakes from the pipes somehow, this was on my Gti, all my brakes work perfectly now

Errrr......the only other place that it would technically possible to bleed them is at the other end of the flexi lines and I wouldn't recommend that!

bleed at the end of flexi? i thought the idea was to fill the piston up and release the air. the piston would be emtey and when brakes are pressed would fill with air. But im no mechanic lol

Niether am I but thats what he done, As I say the brakes and handbrake is fine, I priced Calipers from a part place also and it was £52 a caliper, I couldn't afford that, I may be wrong but am 99.9% sure thats where he said he bled them from

I did this on my old 205 Gti when the rears nipples sheared. Got the Gunson pressure bleeder (Off spare wheel pressure) and cracked the union where the flexi screws into the caliper and was fine ever since!
