17s will probably need arch work
the offset being 35 you will need spacers as the 106 offset is 15-18
the tyres for 17s ideally need to be 205/40/17

As above 17's would require arch work, mainly at the rear. You will need appox 20mm spacers. To give you an idea I run 17 by 7J ET46 rims and I needed 32mm spacers for mine. The inner edge of the rim clears the arch wall by about 2mm! Tyres would ideally be 205/40's but 215/40 or 215/45 will go on. Your speedo will be half a mile out if you fit anything other than 205/40's tho.

how much arch work are you talking about? i would go for 205's as i think they would be easier to fit. also do you think they would look to big?

<--- my flat arch S1 on 17's, not lowered. :D. Tbf a Gti's rear arches will require less work than mine n I did all of mine on my driveway with a rubber mallet n a hair dryer. Front arch liners had to be completely removed and the trailing edge of the arch lip had to be adjusted slighty (read: hit it with said mallet a few times :D).

I prefer 16s anyway 90% of the looks without as much hassle
IMO - 17s look too big - 16s are perfect ;)

i've had 14s 15s and 16s

17s would be hassle though

i've got around 40mm drop on mine
the offset of my wheels is 16 but I put 15mm spacers on the back to push them out in to the arches so it looked better
no spacers on the front and nothing rubs

I ran 17`s with 205/40 and with the arch work mine was fine, i had it lowered 45mm front and 35mm rear and i drove it all over with no probs.

It was a gti arched one, but it started out as a flat arched shell, it was my pride and joy till i wrecked it.
