Hi everyone im new here, my names matt, im 17 and currently learning to drive :D not long now. already got my quiksilver and so far all i hav done to it is a bit on the audio set up. i just had a look at Jonnyh's quiky and i must say i love the black roof and would like to do that to mine, another thing ive thought about is smoothing the boot and atleast get rid of the 106 and peugeot from the boot. how is this done? i also at some point would like to get 15" alloys and lower the car by a bit. heres pics of it so far, please if ya can give me some tips on what ive asked above, i will apreciate it greatly! cheers

hiya matt, im matt too :D
de badgeing the pug and 106 is probly the easiest mod to do, theyre just stuck on, get a screwdriver or something to pick it off (be careful not to scratch the paint!)

Looking good! Nice clean motor you've got there
For debadging, use a hairdryer or similar to warm up the glue that they're stuck on with, then using a credit card slide it under the badge and it should lift off leaving your paint with no scratches.

Kinger

wow thats easier than i thought, i thought they were like bolted on in some way ! thx for the tip im doin that in a minute! :D do either of ya know anything about doing this to the bonnet?
*oh btw doin this on the boot like u've said to, it wont leave a mark of where the badge's have been? thx

Tidy quikie you got there mate 8) debadging boot is sooo easy even I could do it! I used some fishing gut to get the badges off and then used wd-40 to get the excess glue off. As for debaging the front- well thats a whole different can of worms! Fuzz should be able to help you out with that one!

Looking good so far, hope the de-badging goes smoothly :)

Dan

Matey.

De-badging the boot

Just warm the badges up with a hairdryer, this will warm the glue and will peel off really easily. I wouldn't use a screwdriver incase you slip or anything, just heat them with hairdryer and sl;ide a credit card or something behind them, they'll peel off really easy.

De-badging bonnet

Going to be alot harder than with a hairdryer mate, I did try and nothing happened. :P You will need to go to a bodyshop and have it welded up and bonnet resprayed, along with the upper bumper bit. Will cost anything from £200-350 depending on the quality of the work.

Lowering

Depending on what rims you have mate, ive got gti rims like yours and lowered about 60-80mm. It looks sweet and will lose no performance.

Wheels

Remember mate, the bigger you go the less performance your going to get. Big wheels are no longer in so I wouldnt go bigger than 15". There is people on here with all different types of wheels so ask around and see what you like. I did have 16s on my first Quiky but had 40 profile tyres which is very low.

If you need any pictures mate Ill send you them.

Another good mod to do is to remove the pimples off the door handle, them pimples are just a sticker, remove them and youll have smooth black handles.

:)

lol fair enuf im gunna do that later or tomorrow lol! ok thx, so this bonnet bit will probs cost a fair bit of £££ i guess :( ah well i like the look it will be worth it, ok next set of questions, lowering? how much do i lower so as not to rub yet still to look good, biggest alloys i will ever get will be 15". how much does lowering cost, as far as i know i buy a set of springs but then what lol! im clueless at the mo! thanks people
Matt

* ah onli just noticed the latest post lol thx!

Kinger
11-01-2007, 09:32 PM
oh didnt know about the pimples as stickers im doin that too! yer sounds sweet could u possibly post a pic of urs on this thread? cheers x

Dan

Lowering varies in price mate, there is all different quality springs on the market.

If your getting 15's id get some 15's with 45 profile tyre or 40 if you can afford the extra $$$.

You need some lowering springs, somebody to fit them and a professional that can alter your torsion bar.

That is what decides how low the back end sits.

Ive gone 50mm springs and the back about 60-70mm I think as the back does sit higher than the front.

Check out my progress thread and look at mine, see what you think.

That's my last car mate, I removed the pimples and had the handles colour coded.

I also removed the black sticker in between the windows and the quiksilver decals on the doors.

Some people dont like all the de-quiksilvering but I like the smooth look.

As you can see I also chopped the bar out of the front bumper and had it resprayed and colour coded the bump strips.

Kinger
11-01-2007, 09:36 PM
that looks great mate, i like the colour coded bumper strip, and handles!. where can i get the paint or does it need to be done professionally

Dan
11-01-2007, 09:38 PM
I deffinatly wouldnt attempt it myself mate.

It's going to cost money for a proper job but DEFFINATLY worth it.

My brother is currently learning too and he was a Quiky.

He's had his lowered 60mm and got some nice 15's on it.

hugh_106
11-01-2007, 10:01 PM
Firstly, nice car! Now advice, feel free to take or leave, this is my limited knowledge of the subject.

SPRAYIN: I wouldn't attempt it either, the silver is SOO hard to match up.

LOWERING: As said above, you get the springs for the front and the torsion bar at the back needs to be lowered (a lot of garages won't do this). Its also preferable to uprate the Shocks if you're going 40mm or more. Some people don't and are fine with it, but uprated shocks are a good idea in the long run. For example, SPAX VSX kits cost about £220 (ish) for the springs and the 4 shocks and then you need them all fitted. Obviously without shocks the fitting is cheaper, but its up to you. There are loads of other makes either side of Spax to choose from.

ICE: You'l probably get told by quite a few people to ditch the 6x9s, get some front components and amp them. Just thought I'd be the first to say, lol. The sound is better with that setup (all the good sound in the front where you sit) but it can cost a bit more, especially if you already have all the other gear, lol.

Dan
11-01-2007, 10:05 PM
Yes mate, alot of people will tell you to get rid of the 6x9 as not everybody likes them.

You dont go to a gig and stand with your back to the music.

You need good sound coming from the front!

Kinger
11-01-2007, 10:08 PM
yer well 6x9's r in there now and that all sounds good, i got some speakers for the front that ive yet to put in, im not goin to fare with the ICE just enough to satisfy myself lol, i just debadged the boot :D piece of piss theres a slight bit of sticky left but im gunna sort that out in day light and giv the car a wash and polish. lowering, now that all sounds a bit too expensive with the shocks so if i just do the springs will it be ok do u think? and i wont giv sprayin a go then ill let that be done by the professionals too! thanks for all these quick replys so far!
matt

Dan
11-01-2007, 10:11 PM
Thats cool then mate, my new quiky come with 6x9's so probably won't get round to removing them to be fair. Haha.

You'll have to start a progress thread mate like mine and keep adding pictures. :D

hugh_106
11-01-2007, 10:13 PM
Fair enough, if the sound pleases you then thats fine mate ;). However, if you wana let me know what your front speakers are (link maybe) and how much u reckon you could sell them and the 6x9s for, I might be able to see if you could get the better stuff for little money. (Details of sub and amp would be handy too). If not, no worries.

On the lowering side of things, how much have you got to spend and how low do you want it?

Kinger
11-01-2007, 10:16 PM
ill leave the audio for now guys but thx ne ways maybe in the future! umm ive got a fair bit of ££ couple of hundred but im not gunna be doin it yet but soon. im not sure how low i want it, i want it low enough to look good and not rub on the alloys, if i was to get new alloys id get 15"'s

Dan
11-01-2007, 10:17 PM
Go 50mm dude with 60mm at the back, that looks amazing on 15's.

Kinger
11-01-2007, 10:19 PM
okey doke sounds good, what springs do i need and how much would u say labour would be on that, cheers man!
matt

Dan
11-01-2007, 10:21 PM
Id go for Eibach 50mm springs, there the dogs bollocks.

Ive got Spax on my new one but had Eibach before.

Eibach are a very good ride quality.

Probably £100 for the springs. £40 to fit them and about £120 for the torsion bar.

So around £260.

Jonnyh
11-01-2007, 10:23 PM
Nice looking quiky mate sounds like you got some good plans for it, keep up the good work dude!

Nice quiky bud! Get a progress thread up!

hugh_106
11-01-2007, 10:25 PM
Dan, did you find that the Eibach 50mm springs actually lowered yours 50mm and not less. Just wondering, cus I want to get mine lower, got any pics of them 'in action', lol.

Dan
11-01-2007, 10:34 PM
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/sexualdan/CIMG2392.jpg

That ok for you mate?

Thats 50mm Eibachs and 60mm on torsion on 16's with 40 profile.

Kinger
11-01-2007, 10:40 PM
wow i thought it be cheaper than that! hmmm not sure what to do, urs looks great mate i think 50mm is enough! just what i want. i will hav to look around for a gd price now!

Tim
11-01-2007, 10:41 PM
nice looking quikky mate, seems as if youve got some good plans for it, will be good to see pics as you update it :D

11-01-2007, 10:46 PM
ATM I have the Ecosse/AVO '60mm' GTi springs which seem to have lowered mine anything between 35-45, not sure. That looks well nice Dan, plus my future (very future) plan is to get 16s, so that would work a treat. Cheers.

BTW, Kinger, it cost me £400 to get my done. £200 for springs and shocks and £200 for labour. £260 is cheap.

Dan
11-01-2007, 10:48 PM
Make sure you go for 40" profile tyres mate.

If you really want it to look like my pic...

James.G
11-01-2007, 10:54 PM
lowering can come cheeper than that...

eibach sportlines (50mm) are £80.. then £100 to fit and do the torsion bar. so £180 :)

hugh_106
11-01-2007, 11:00 PM
The fitting prices depends massively on where you live so for that part you really need to ring around places. Also, theres the debate over which method to use when lowering the torsion bar. Splines/notches or mm....let the debate commense.

Dan
11-01-2007, 11:05 PM
£100 to do the torsion AND fit the springs.

THATS CRAZY!

WHERE?!

You wont get the torsion done for less than £120 round here.

Nice clean quiky dude, awesome for a first car, look after it ;)

James.G
11-01-2007, 11:08 PM
local garage buy me... i was looking everywhere for somewhere to do it. then throught **** it might aswell ring them, as theres a guy down there with a GTI and they said yeah they will.. so off i went..

did it the mm way and fitted my springs all for £105 i think it was.

Dan
11-01-2007, 11:10 PM
That's amazing!

I'll drive the length of the country if I can find somewhere that can lower my pug properly (+ not too expensive)

if you have gti springs you wont get the right lowering amount cos the gti engine is quite alot heavier, so they wont shorten as much on a quikie

A place by mine called checkpoint witch are a rip off garage only charge £100 to lower the torsion bar, they did say thats depending on the state of it though.

danbz75
12-01-2007, 11:50 AM
i really wouldnt trust checkpoint lol
mr bz and mr belton are doing mine so i only need to buy the kit the fitting wil be free

i think ill have a call around wen im actually passed! thx for all the advice etc. ive got a question about my front speakers tho
there 13cm and i thought they'd just replace the old ones, however my new ones came with these small metal clips that fit on the whole in the door, one per screw hole. but they dont reach the screw holes from the edge of the speakers hole. confusing stuff! how can i secure the speakers in the door with out these clips?

James.G
12-01-2007, 03:49 PM
bit confused... ???

cant you just take out the old ones.. and use the old screws to scure the new ones in?

Kinger
12-01-2007, 04:13 PM
i tried it but the old ones kept turnin and wouldnt tighten up to the full :S

James.G
12-01-2007, 04:30 PM

im sure someone will have a solution...

Kinger
14-01-2007, 08:18 PM
ive fitted the door speakers now, just redrilled the holes smaller and the screws did up alright!. i was just browsing the forum agian for more ideas and came across window tiniting. what would be involved in tinting the back 3 windows black? how much can i tint by law etc. cheers!. p.s if theres any cheap, but effective, mods you can think of that will look any good, please let me know! all suggestions welcome!

regards, Matt

Dan
14-01-2007, 08:21 PM
Tell us what you've done so far mate.

De-badge.
De-wiper
Peel pimple's off door handles

3 main cheap mods.

rich106quiksilver
14-01-2007, 08:21 PM
I'm thinking of tinting too.

I think the back 3 can be tinted any amount. Otherwise vans etc wouldn't be legal.

The front ones can be tinted a certain % i think not sure.

Dan
14-01-2007, 08:25 PM
Pretty sure the fronts are 35% mate.

rich106quiksilver
14-01-2007, 08:27 PM
Cops in my area went through a phase of pulling over anyone with front tints, pretty harsh. But like Dan said, stay within the correct % if doing the fronts.

Kinger
14-01-2007, 08:27 PM
yer i dont want the front ones too dark if i had them done, i found a local place online just now that says for a 3 doo hatchback it will cost From £200 + VAT, is that any good?

Dan
14-01-2007, 08:28 PM
Not really, thats expensive dude.

You get what you pay for though.

Kinger
14-01-2007, 08:33 PM
yer just found another place for £109, but dnt know where it is! so is it best to get it done professionally?

rich106quiksilver
14-01-2007, 08:34 PM
I got quoted a similar price aswell around 100-150. You can do the job yourself, but its good if another person helps. Me and my friend managed to tint his Escort pretty good.

Of course if your willing to pay them professionals should do a good job. Depends on if ya want to spend the xtra.

Kinger
14-01-2007, 08:36 PM
is it easy to do tho? i suppose you can just buy the window film then?

rich106quiksilver
14-01-2007, 08:38 PM
We found a bit of practice first helps! Also avoid windy weather if your doing it outside. If you can find yourself some cheap tint roll to practice with it could be worth it.

Kinger
14-01-2007, 08:39 PM
yer sounds like a good idea, im not sure tho :s ill probably screw it up some how ha! how much is the window tint film?

rich106quiksilver
14-01-2007, 08:41 PM
Cant remember how much we got the tint stuff for but it was cheap on Ebay.

The hardest part was tinting the boot window, especially on an Escort!

Kinger
14-01-2007, 08:43 PM
ah right fair enuf, what was hard about it? did u actually take the windows off to tint them?

Dan C
14-01-2007, 08:44 PM
I helped tint my mates car using that film. You need a really sharp stanley for the edges, and loooooooaaaaaaddddsssss of patience!

But id always get a pro to do it, i got quoted £95 for back 3.

rich106quiksilver
14-01-2007, 08:47 PM
We didnt bother, but the quiksilver back ones can be taken off easily and should make it alot easier.

The hardest part is making sure the corners are cut to fit in and also getting any air bubbles out!

We placed a large sheet on the window and made sure all corners were pushed in tightly, then cut of the excess film. (hope that makes sense!)

Edit - Just saw Dans post, Stanley knife is essential!

Dan C
14-01-2007, 08:54 PM
We used a ice scraper, which had a rubber protector over the blade to get the air bubbles out. Sounds dodgy, but it worked a treat!

Kinger
14-01-2007, 08:55 PM
hmmm i wouldnt mind doin it myself to save money, doesnt sound too hard realli, well i will think about it.

rich106quiksilver
14-01-2007, 08:56 PM
Cool, we used the Tesco clubcard lol, but your method is better!

Dan C
14-01-2007, 08:57 PM
The film isnt much, so if you screw up you can always just buy another roll!

Kinger
14-01-2007, 08:58 PM
yer good point, do u know what is the legal tint for the back windows? and any good website to buy the stuff from?

Dan
14-01-2007, 09:01 PM
Would even attempt it myself mate, itll look tacky.

Get it done by the professionals.

You wouldnt cut your own hair or operate on your own heart so dont try to do something you dont do for a living unless you want to take the risk of a shiiiiiiiiiiiit outcome.

Kinger
14-01-2007, 09:05 PM
as i said im thinkin about it, just getting a general idea of whats involved before i make any rash decisions

James.G
14-01-2007, 09:08 PM
the front 3 cant be tinited atall. any amount is illegal.

Dan- i can see where your coming from but..
im not a professional mechanic but i work on my car all the time. Aslong as you have confidence and know what your doing, i dont see the point in getting the professionals do to it...

ooo while im thinkin of things, whats involved in delocking the boot for that total smooth look?

Dan
14-01-2007, 11:05 PM
Delocking the boot will cost you anything from £150 to £250.

Place near me is £150 which is good, very good mod.

My front ones are slightly tinted! Thought they were allowed to be but not by very much at all? O well, i've never had any problems with the police over them!!

I cut ma own hair :P

But for the price these days get the tints done pro, place by me does a 3 door car fronts, rears, and rear windscreen for £100

Tim
15-01-2007, 08:32 AM
everyone near me is getting pulled over at the mo for there front ones and being asked to remove them, but light smoke is legal on the front providng the glass isnt factory tinted already which 106's are. but try it yourself its only about £10 for the film so no big deal if goes wrong just peel it off, i tinted mine but they started peeling around the bolts in the rear windows so i took it off, alot of people near me will do it for about £50-60 if you provide the film and its a good job.

Lacey
15-01-2007, 01:06 PM
Kinger.... buy my g-max springs..... lol, £50 for you!

My bf's got the whole g-max set up on his 306..... it handles superbly (sp?) anyway, i was quoted £120 for my torsion bar, and thats still relatively cheap considering the amount of work that goes with it, and if it's not done properly then ur screwed basically. Talk to your mates and they will no someone that did a friend of a friends car and then go with them if they were good... cos u don't want some cow boy doing ur torsion bar!

Kinger
15-01-2007, 05:26 PM
lol tempting but im not lookin to lower just yet, sounds a good price tho. onli problem when u say ask a friend, none of my friends drive yet, im like the first one to be 17 ha! but ill find somewhere nearer the time, i think ill get it delocked first. i would love to debadge the bonnet too but not sure on a definate cost of it :S
