Can anyone provide any idea's of how to get the gearbox back on on a GTi...?
Tried everything hacking it up , all the mounts are off and out the way... nothing will work... tried for a good hour and a half before it went dark and got pissed off in the end.
Anyone know how to take the powersteering pump off too as that might help? Cheers

you shouldnt need to take the power steering pump out the way. Try turning the shaft in the gearbox ever so slightly. The splines on the shaft may not be matching up with the spline on the clutch.

Its hard to really say how to do it but try and get the splines located into the engine and just wiggle when its ready to go it will slide piece of piss,
as you said though take off everything that is possibly causing an obstruction
be careful of the thrust bearing though do not want to damage that.
99% of the time its always a pain in the ass to put a gearbox back on! im gatherin your engine is still in the car so thats probs just gonna make it harder!
best way iv found is just to take the engine out, if your not up for that though, probs get a couple of mates to help, 4 hands are better that 2

Yeah There were two of us trying it just doesnt want to pop on its a right pain in the arse!
do you reckon having the car jacked up quite high will make it harder? angle of the engine and everything.....

id leave the power steering pump on not really in the way.#
How many ppl have you got helping, i really wouldnt recommoned you doing it by yourself especialy when your doing it on the floor lol!
i find it easier to have two ppl under neath and one person on the top guideing it on. no jacks jus lift it on:)
Easy once youve done it a few times.

Yeah Ive done it a couple of times, was a while back the last one..
Someones saying that if the new clutch isnt aligned then it would mean the box wont go on :S

yea, you must have the clutch aligned. I used a socket extension with tape to take the slack fit. But would recommend investing on a alignment tool, not much, normally priced in single digits and in the long run time and hastle saving, and clutches dnt last as long as they used to these days.
With the clutch not in line, the shaft will just not go into the crank...thats your best bet

An Alignment tool was used though ?

i just took the passenger one off when i did mine, thought id save time lol Was not the case!!! Lower the engine down as far as it will go (still on the mounts) and support it by a jack. Then, you'll need strong triceps for this and a bullet proof chest lol, lie under the car with the gearbox on your chest and push it up. If Liam or someone is there get am to take some of the weight by tieing a rope around the box and hoisting it up.then get the gearbox bellhousing to roughly the same angle as the engine and push it on. Ive done this 4 times in two days lol and this method works every time

if ur putting a differnt box back in make sure the dowels on the block and engine match up,eg dowels are meeting eachother

are these different to 8v's?
we just had engine flat, box on one end of a plank of wood, and a wheel half way down it, someone pushed on the wood like a sea-saw and one pulls the box up through the engine bay and possitions whilst the other takes the weight on the wood?

tell me bout it.
dont need to take power steering pump off.
did you completly remove driveshafts from car or just pull out if you just pulled out pull drivers side and pull it far back as poss as this stops it going on input shaft.
what i did was get it on input shaft then move fly wheel till it slid on helps if one of you is built like a brick wall to hold and slide it on

Might be worth lining the clutch back up again. While the friction plate is off just run it up and down the splines on the 'box to make double sure that it's the right one and there's nothing stopping it moving. Then put the gearbox in 5th gear and turn in one way and another as you've got it lined up with the engine. Should just pop on.
