hi,
i want to buy a 106 gti to as a track car. is there a buyers guide? what's best to go for? i'm after wanting to spend about £1500 on 1, nothing to special, it'll be ripped and stripped right away.
also, whats best for suspension? brakes and the engine mods?
any advice would be good.

Dont really know what to look out really for, besides the usual like any misfire
in the engine, engine oil, not overheating, gearbox not plastered in oil!
106s dont tend to rust as much as other cars as the bumpers and arches are
plastic. I know the drop links can go quite easily on these cars, have a listen
out for them when test driving. Mashed driveshafts, syncros in the gearbox
may be damaged in higher mileage ones.
Cant really think what else mate.
Mods wise, first off suspension I would recommend Bilstien Sprintine shock
absorbers all round and maybe some custom poundage spings if its for track.
Brakes you will want a minimum of GTi6 brakes up front, a nice set of 4 pots
would be better but they will cost you double what the GTi6 set will cost!
Engine mods, well best way to get power out of the 1.6 16v is easily a
manifold (either 421 or 41 will do, not a great lot of difference) full system,
exhaust (Pugsport are a good choice!), air filter (want an enclosed one really),
ported and polished head, nice set of cams (Catcam 708s are supposed
to be really good) then after all that a remap will be needed to get the adjust
the timing. Wont cost you thousands for all that lot really. In an ideal world
a turbo or throttle bodies would be awesome but they cost.

thankyou, thats sound advice!
for track the suspension has to be grpN billies and some custom springs :)

I got the Blisten Sprintlines on mine, pugsport exhaust with sports cat and a SS manifold and a closed airfilter and waiting for the cash to cam it and skim 'n polish the head! But seems pretty good otherwise!

Hello people,
I'm new to the forum and I need some help.
I want to buy 106 1.6 16v so I'm asking if you could tell me what I need to look for on the car.
I'm new to Peugeot world, are there any common problems on that model, if you have some advice please tell me.
The car I'm looking for is '97 GTI, seller says that it has everything except leather. What is standard equipment for that model?
thanks

same as any other gti, all u are missing is the half leather interior (which also has rear headrests that look sweet)
RobShaw
01-06-2007, 01:13 PM
Yeah. the 97 will come with cloth interior, a key pad immoboliser and bumper strips down the door.
in 98, the sacked all that off, and got half leather/alacantara seats and got rid of the keypad.
You will have a different sunroof, to the later models, make sure its not leaking.
good luck.
what color are you look at getting?!

01-06-2007, 01:38 PM
Check the sunroof isn't leaking and that the cam covers arent leaking.
When you get there, check all around the cam covers and engine for oil. If there isn't any, thats good, but the owner may have just wiped it off. Take it out for a test drive (a good few miles) then check it again when you get back.

I found this for sale, looks a smart motor - (my 106 mardi gras 1995 has just packed in), is it worth a purchace. (its says yellow, but its gold in the picture ive seen) I was thinking about a quiksilver, but because of the age/price of this car should i snap it up? Cheers, Simon

If its the one in Peterborough, (and it sounds like it is), it's utter rubbish. It is accident repaired, although to look at it you wouldn't beleive it has been repaired. Steer well clear!

Just got a good one on a Y plate, and that was only just under that. If no damage or shoddy repair, then buy it! Though if roony is right, i wouldnt bother!
hey simon, my mate danny was thinking of getting that one if its the one off auto trader, but his dad is saying must be something up with it. if u want a 2003 tho get my monster!!

I phoned him up to ask about its condition and history and he told me it was in great condition, no dents/scratches etc and was clear on history. On the strength of this i drove about 50 miles to look at it.
I could have swung for the lying tw@t when i saw the state of it, Looked like someones taken a cricket bat to every pannel! When i got hold of the joker selling it he said in his best english (not first language) that he wouldn't have said that on the phone as his was damaged repaired. Sounded very similar to me though!
If it was anywhere near as good a bargain as it sounds it would have gone the first day it was advertised.

Hi and welcome dude
Headgasket, check oil and water, make sure it isnt mixed etc. rear engine mounts go but isnt a problem,..can get a uprated one for 50 pound.
Just stupid bits really, like leaking sunroofs (if it has one) Door retainer straps sticking when the doors fully opened.
Alarm sensors tend to play up, setting the alarm off all the time, best thing to do is get a after market alarm and unplug the standard one. (if its messing about)
Good luck and hope you return with pics of it ;)

Leaking sunroof, alarm with a mind of its own, rear axle.
shaw-106
20-07-2007, 07:02 PM
alarm with its own mind comes standard im afraid lol. Look for oil leaks in the engine and on there driveway. (around the oil cap is normal).
When you go out in it for a drive. If the guy says you can put your foot down as soon as you get off his driveway. then a 100% no no.
Go with your gut feeling! Dont get excited and just buy it!

There are some minters out there, but also alot of dogs... Obviously check the car thoroughly for general condition etc.. Alot of 106's have car park dings in the doors & rear quarters & it completely spoils them... Check the arches & skirts are still in place & not hanging off.. Lol..
Sunroof has a tendancy to leak on some... Mine has been perfect in the 2 years i have owned it, but my previous 106 used to leak from time to time...
The bearings in the rear trailing arms also sometimes give way.. Check the rear wheels are nice & straight & not rubbing on the arch etc...
Alarm also, as said above...
Good luck.. :)

I'm looking at a GTi this weekend, and was wondering if theres anything in paticular that I should check, based on it being a GTi? A common fault perhaps?
The one i'm interested in atm is black, leather interior, 100k miles, R reg, and got the usual alloys/exhuast/induction... is it worth a shout, or is 100k miles really worth avoiding?

Stevie_GTI
04-12-2007, 09:38 PM
they migh save you some cash in the short term, but i think most people would agree they would rather buy a car with fewer mods. Mods on the car bring the value down, so id def be trying to get it for less than that

Hi there,
I am seriously looking into buying a 106 gti, i have about 1500 to spend so the car will be on the closer end to 100k on the clock.
I was wondering what are the bad points to look out for when buying one?
Thanks
chompy
15-12-2007, 12:23 PM
play in the trailing arms/split pins is one of THE beggest problems you can get apart from not having an engine lol! so check the trailing arms on the beam for horizontal play
leightaylor
15-12-2007, 12:40 PM
Thanks, is that a majour fix if there is problems with the trailing arm?
chompy
15-12-2007, 01:29 PM
very, and usualy very expensive! unless your good with spanners lol i got quoted £380 to replace the trailing arm bearings and that was without the split pins which more than likely would have been gone aswel

i just spent 2k on a GTi that had done 104,000 miles, so 1500 is pushing it, but ya neva know...
watch out for spare wheel, wheel jack, gaps inbetween doors/bonnet/boot/wings, oil leaks, mods gone wrong, sun roof leak, and check to see all lights working, more often than not, there are a couple not working

it was worth it. the car is unbelievable.
Ball joints....
Various other rubber perishables such as engine mounts etc will be the main problem.
If you find one for 1500 you will be lucky, remember do a HPI check on it to make sure its legit.

find out how much a garage wants to change the clutch and auto electrion for quotes on the alram and take the written quotes with you no really knock price down.

(now all merged)
I'd say spend a good half hour checking the car before even taking it for a test drive.
check electircs such as windows, horn, no warning lights on. then start her up and check the engine for any oil or heating and exhuast for blowing. then when test driving give it some beans (owner wont like but needs to be done). check steering and PAS responds well and brakes for sure.
then when your back, leave it running and check the engine again
joe, stop being sooo ghey sometimes and help people out! then winge at them for not searching at the end of your post! :P
Dont be alaramed by knocking suspension, its normally the ball joint in the wishbone which is a fairly easy fix
If the car sounds a bit gash when starting form cold, dont worry. Hydraulic tappets wont have any oil so it will sound a bit ratty. Once the oil is circulated this should go away.
Usual things like leaking fluids is not good....
Oh and use the search ;)

hi i was all set to buy a 1997 106 gti but after reading your comments + posts on here for the past week(ish) dont know if thats such a good idea... so yeah its gunna be fun WHEN it works (big when) and if im spending nearly 4k on car and insurance cant afford to keep fixing it.. well suppose what im asking is if they are as bad for unreliability as people make out? thanks
doely_gti
01-01-2008, 06:06 PM
they aren't bad if they been looked after. like the old saying treat them mean and keep them keen doesn't really apply to a 106 lol
darren106
01-01-2008, 06:11 PM
if its been thrashed and not looked after your asking for trouble
then again mileage and age don't mean everything if its had a good owner
Wayne
01-01-2008, 06:13 PM
It realy depends on the pervouis owners, Its a gti so its going to have been driven hard at some point in its lifetime. Have a good look though the service history and the amount of pervious owners. If its had 10 then your probaly best leaving it alone, as at least 5 of them will have given it a good pasting. Where as if its only got 3 owners then it might havehad a easy life. Look for things like cam belts in the service history, check its been serviced regulary and not every few years or been sold just before mot times. Also check everything when looking over it IE: Sparewheel(and tyres) bulbs, windows work, chairs adjust, rear demister works, wipers ect dont forget if you buy it then your going to want to use every part of the car its no good buying it then realising the windows wont wind down or the heaters dont work.

ditto m8,that is why the best examples will hold their value-same with any car that has been looked after-thats why my car is up for sale at the price it
is!!!!-only thrashed/abused examples are gonna be dirt cheap-YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!
Hi all,
and Happy New Year!
Now onto the point. I am in search for a 106 that will become my very first car. My only reading so far is the one at Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_106). Since they don't make 106es since 2003 that means I need to find a 2nd-hand, good condition, which at least in my country is a bit of a challenge. Especially the Rallye and GTi editions of the 106 were most likely to have been bought by youngsters that had no respect for the car (no means to offend anyone here!).
So, I am looking for a GTi or a Rallye in a good condition with 50K kilometers or less. Both cars, I think, come with the 1.6 L (1587 cc) TU5 I4 120PS engine. Yesterday, I found an ad from a guy that sells his 2002 Rallye in a 'good' - condition according to him. It might be, but since I am not likely to trust my 6,000 euros he asks for the car, I will be visiting a Peugeot garage for a checkup, to see it see if everything is working indeed. Before I do that, do you have any tips that I can check on my own before I take the car to the garage? What are the most common problems the 106 is most likely to have after a few thousand miles under its bonnet? For a starter, how can I check that the model is indeed a 2002 and that the engine is the TU5? Any photos (or links with existing ones) would be most welcome, as I am not an expert on detailed car mechanics!
Thanks in advance,
Jason

are you planning to stick around on this forum mate?
welcome aboard, most gti's and rallyes will have been driven hard at some point in thier lives and a minter with 50k or less will set you back anything from £3,000 to £5,500 (colour dependent) Just do your usual checks on the car, and ask the onwer lots of questions, if it doesn't look or feel right, walk away!
hope this helps a little bit

Hello all, I have decided that my big Jag is a bit too costly to go to work each day and have looked a 106, its on a N plate, 110000 miles, its a Aztec 1.1 and in very good condtion, the car looks new and its been owned by a female for an age. it has 6 months tax and MOT and a full service History. Just wanted to ask anybodys opnions on this car, Its 400 uid, is that about right for a car of that standard? And also, as I said eralier, the car has a full service history, but I can't find any notes on the service book to see if there has been a new cambelt fitted, would it more than likely have been done, or should I just bite the bullet and fit a new one, not sure what the cost would be, but Imagine that its not the earth.
If anybody could help with this, or has any opnions on the car that I shall be getting, I would love to hear from you.
Cheers

Welcome to the club bud:)
with regards to the 106 it seems a good buy at 400, you can check if the cambelt is on its way out by lookin at it. If its shiny or you can see the backs of the 'teeth' it needs doing

Cheers mate, I'll look at it tomo, but I need to ask another question, where is it? is it easy to find? As you could probably tell, I'm useless with cars.

£400 with a full service history is spot on in price IMO
basic rule with timing belts...if you don't know when it was done or your weary of it, change it! saves the price of a new engine, shouldn't be more than £120 including labour and parts!

Hey, I introduced myself the other day, not had much chance to come on since then.
So I've been looking around at different quicksilvers and I have lined a few up, but before I view them, I'd like to know for things to look out for when I'm viewing it that will give me indications as to whether the car has been screwed or not. I've seen a few on Autotrader with pretty low milage, below 40,000, and they are within my price range.
Is there anything on these cars that are prone to degredation that I would be able to spot?
I'd also like to know how well these cars are holding up when they get to 70/80,000 miles on the clock, as most of the ones I'm viewing have milage within this range.
Plus, if anybody knows of websites etc that have alot of or specialise in 106 sales then your help would be much appreciated, thanks alot.
Feel free to put forward your thoughts.
Thanks for the feedback, Rob

lots and lots of links to websites for 106's...
wouldn't worry about 70/80k theres plenty on here with that, one thats on 140k and only just having its clutch changed!
just check the usual stuff, noise's, rust etc.
hi just done a hpi check on a car for sale, came back with
cat c 19/11/2005
cat d 08/11/2006
last change of keeper 03/07/2007

hmm wonder how long its been on the jig for lol
how can a car change fron a cat c to a d
106turbo
11-01-2008, 04:15 PM
its had two seperate accidents. only way i would get it is depending what was repaired and how well it was repaired. It been jigged then need to have a real good look or just walk away.

11-01-2008, 04:19 PM
tbh i wouldnt bother after 1 cat c or d never mind 2 lol

11-01-2008, 04:20 PM
Yep two diffrent accidents. The cat c was repaired put back on the road then it was written off again to a Cat D standard
Personally 1 accident is too much for me so would never touch one thats had 2
thats goodm enough for me thanks

ohhh well lest it drives in a straight line :D
rob_s
11-01-2008, 06:21 PM
cat C is heavy damaged = to 100% value of the car
cat D is = 50%+ ,light or no damage (stolen recoverd are useually cat D)
and theres nothing wrong with buying a damaged car,if its been repaird right,i can think of a few write offs on here, mine been one of them
Marvvv
11-01-2008, 06:32 PM
to pass the vic surely they have had to of been repaired right
both mine and adams XS's are cat Cs and both drive bob on
leigh_lad
11-01-2008, 06:33 PM
mine aswell!
Wizza
11-01-2008, 09:57 PM
Mine was a Cat D and drives fine!!!
mine would have been a cat C atleast if i had of gone through the insurence and when its back in one piece i bet it'll be in better condition than quite alot of the cars on here
only be put off a damage repaired car if the work carried out on it is shit and theres no proof of whats actually been done to it

Hi everyone,
New to the forum and really loving the idea of a Pug 106 1.5D :D
Yes I know, an oil burner, but the MPG is swinging it for me I'm afraid.
Anyway, there is no real buyers guide on here, but there a few good comments in this (http://www.106owners.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=21198) post. It is a bit off topic for just a buyers guide, so I wondered if something specific might be a bit better (I have nicked all the relevant bits where I could and condensed)? If I have made any mistakes, someone please let me know so I can correct it. If anyone who has any good advice/things to check can post them here so others can know what to look for if diving in to buy a used 106. There are a lot of rough ones around now, so having something on this site would be great to help people who are not familiar with the car.
Particular problems with the 1.5 diesel engines post '95 ( ?) would be very useful for myself.
Are there any problems with emissions, or disappearing in greater-than-normal clouds of black soot? What causes this if it happens?
I have found the following so far:
Play in the trailing arms/split pins is one of THE biggest problems you can get so check the trailing arms on the beam for horizontal play.
Is this just a bush replacement fix, or something more serious? How much to fix?
From the above-linked post:
Major work and usually very expensive! Unless your good with spanners. Quoted £380 to replace the trailing arm bearings and that was without the split pins which more than likely would have been gone as well
Leaky sunroof.
Could this be drain tubes or seals? Any idea guys and gals?
Speedo not working - new cable for £20 (DIY'er)
Obviously check for signs of damage. Panel alignment, colour mis-match etc. Lifting a few easily accessible carpets to get to interior metal surfaces may be able to help? Any official categorized damage (e.g. Cat C, Cat D) should be on the V5. It has been noted in other posts that a problem with the saxo & 106's is that they are bad for panels lining up even if they haven't been in a smash. Gaps between the bonnet and wings are common.
Headgasket? (Apparently made out of feeble chocolate, so common failure?)
Check oil (mayo under the filler cap) and water (coolant header tank) for contamination. There is a thread on replacing the headgasket here (http://www.106owners.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=19237&highlight=headgasket)
Cambelt. You can check if the cambelt is on its way out by looking at it. If it's shiny or you can see the backs of the 'teeth' it needs doing. They say every 70k - but I also think every 4 years really because they go brittle. When you do change it, include the idler. Change the water pump at the same time - it the cambelt has been recently changed on a car you are thinking of buying, make sure this has also been done.
Basic rule with timing belts...if you don't know when it was done or your weary of it, change it! saves the price of a new engine, shouldn't be more than £120 including labour and parts!
Ball joints and various other rubber perishables such as engine mounts (around £8-15 from eurocarparts.com (http://www.eurocarparts.com)) etc will be the main problem. Don't be alarmed by knocking suspension, its normally the ball joint in the wishbone which is a fairly easy fix.
Oil leaks from around the engine.
Hear the car start from cold. Why is this? What are we listening for? Is it just hydraulic tappets, and does this affect both petrol and diesel engines?
Alarm sensors tend to play up, setting the alarm off all the time, best thing to do is get a after market alarm and unplug the standard one (if its messing about).
Check to see all lights working, more often than not, there are a couple not working, in fact, check all bulbs, windows work, chairs adjust, rear demister works and all wipers/screenwash.
Watch out for spare wheel and jack
I am presuming this means either they are in really back nick, or they are missing all together.
Please,
If you have any tips or hints, feel free to add them.
joe106gti
22-01-2008, 09:45 PM
shoudnt really be problems with emissions if its a diesel with a good lamda sensor, air flow sensor and clean engine and cat converter and no blowing holes.
if the rear beams gone its going to be expensive.
leaky sunroof is most likely the seal, guide in the DIY section on to stop it.
as for the engine from cold, when its warm all the parts and already ready to work. for instance the starter motor, alternator or battery may be rubbish when cold and need some time to get going properly, also the oil will be thinner when hot so wont be so obvious if the oil is lumpy and the gaskets gone for instance. just useful because youll always be starting it from cold.
yeh, the jack and spare wheel may not be there at all, or the jack may be rusty or bent and the spare tyre may be flat/ have a puncture or no tread

Some of the higher mileage 106's mite well have more fragile gearboxes as the bearings tend to go quite easily, just check for a slight wining noise when changing gear and accelerating.

Just a little note for u guys thinking of buying a 106, if u see an oil stain jus above the alternator! this means the haedgasket is on its way out! Its a common problem mainly on the quiksilver and 1.1 models!

Its meant to be done every 5 years or 60k miles
Last service
The condidtion of the tyres, will it need new ones?
General condition of interior and exterior.
Check the service history, when has it been done and with who
Small things like that.

Had a read through so thought I'd add a few bits. Some good advise in here:)
Check you have the key for the locking wheel nuts, some can be a pain in the ass to get off without keys.
Black oil means an engine that hasn't been looked after. Take the HT leads off and check the top of the plugs too.
Make sure all the tyres are legal, if there not, pick out every other niggle with the car you can find and tell him.
Check the boot opens, and as has been said before check the alarm for 5 minutes.
Check the alloys/tyres for nicks and curbing. It can lead to bigger problems with the steering.
Check the tracking is good.
under light accelerating and breaking check to see if the car twists from left to right, this would suggest ball joint, bushes or sus.
Electric mirrors and guages, breaks, clutch, loose hubs, wheel bearings, and a big one as has been said a few posts up. Check for rust on the boot floor, this means rust has spread through the majority of the belly.
----------
I also have a question:rolleyes:
The guage on the right of an xsi, I cant remember what it is, either oil pressure or oil temp. From terning the key in the ignition it maxes out at red, but drives like a dream and pulls like a train:confused:
What would need replacing, I am assuming its a faulty reading.

It's oil temp and level. When you turn the ignition on it goes yellow and the needle rises - this shows you the oil level (not very accurate though). As soon as you start the engine it becomes the oil temp and will drop back down if the engine is cold.
If yours is reading high, then either the oil temp isn't working so it's still showing the level, or the needle is sticking to the lens of the dials and not going back down (mine did this on occassions).

cheers. I'll have to have a look. Might start with punching the lens:p
The oil level is deffently all good, it only got changed days ago. The temp isnt going to be through the roof the second it gets terned on, ill see about the sticky dial, Its a bit annoying as this is the only part that doesn't work!

Just remembered, it wasn't actually the plastic lens as that sits a fair bit further forward, it was the face of the dial that it used to stick against.

I've gone through this thread to see what i should be looking for. I dont kow a whole lot about cars and neither does anyone i know really. How can I check for play in the trailing arms?
I can make do with small faults that ive read here that wont cost much to fix as I'll probably get the car serviced when i get it anyway. Any other small things I'll try and do myself.
I'm not sure how to sort out a test drive either tho, My insurance wont cover me on anyone elses car, would I need to take along someone who's insurance will cover them? Problem being that my friends are all the same age as me and have equally rubbish insurance.
Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks, Liam
