Now then, i've got a new alternator belt for my gti but from what I can see looks a faf to get the old one off. know its a 5mm allen key on the tensioner but is there any ways tricks to use as doesn't look like i'll be able to get tension off with a 5mm allen key?
cheers any help appreciated.

you need to go underneath the car and just below the alternator there is a bole that moves the tensioner up and down. loosen that off with the 5mm alley key. Then undo the bolt that secures the tensioner (13mm i think) once loosened you will be able to get belt off. Put new belt on and then put the tension on and tighten the 13mm bolts

not a guide but bit of info about the altnernator and belt.
Easiest is take the front wheels off and the front bumper. the more room the better.
probably eaisest from underneath

undo the pinch bolt above the alternator, the undo the pinch bolt on the tensioner slider, unscrew the tension screw until there is enough downward movement in the alternator when u push it down to slip the belt off the pulleys. put the new belt on at tighten it so you can get a 90 degree turn on the belt without struggling with it pinched between your thumb and finger.
edit: just realised you drive a 16v, you will have to undo the tensioner pulley rather then a tension screw

Sorry to be a pain,
Attempted to change the alternator belt today but didnt get very far as expected! Read the Haynes but unsure what nuts / screws to undo. Have taken some pictures, please could someone edit them with what parts need undoing etc, rep given! Thanks in advance!

hey man, just done mine 2nite at work, you see the threaded rod you need to screw that up so it pulls tensioner down, unscrew 13mm bolt on bottom of tensioner and the 13mm bolt hidden you can get to from the top of the engine. use a screwdriver/prybar to pry tensioner down as it'll be tight probably. do this until you get the belt slack enough and repeat in reverse order to install.
hope that helps

Just for clarification, do i screw the bolt up first (red circle) then undo the nut (green circle)?

i undo the bolt (green) and then the screw (red). it may start to drop down but as shadestints said you may need to push it down.

Cheers mate, he mentioned having to undo another bolt from the top part of the engine bay, but not sure which one. I thought the pulley was just held by the bolt I circled?

as far as i can remember you only need to undo that one bolt. as the others just hold the bracket on if i remember correctly.
