My dads 106 gti is starting to smoke badly from the exhaust and it stinks when it gets hot, theres abit of oil leakin on the engine but i thout it was just from the filler car as thats leaking slightly. Its a R-reg and has about 105k miles on it now, what do you all think it could be?
cheers

what colour is the smoke?

If its got a blue tint to it your burning oil, and that could be a seal or worn piston rings...

or it could be the head gasket , have you check the water level isit dropping the more you run the engine?

It just seems to be white but havnt looked at the smoke in too much detail, I will check the water to see if its dropping

mines giving out a lot of steam at the minute.

looks very similar to smoke but it disipates into the air a few feet away from the exhaust.

most cars on the road have got it in this weather but mine looks really bad! think its due to the relatively large bore exhaust

Yeah it seems realy bad 2 mate, the gti has a full exhaust on without the cat but not sure if its just 'steam' or whether it is smoke. Some futher investigation is in order tomorrow i think

Just watch the Oil for creamy white gasket sealant, and that the coolant isn't dropping. It might not be the headgasket, but it's better if you know it is rather than leaving a broken one right?

the creamy white in oil when a head gasket goes is water mate, i dont know anybody to use sealant with a head gasket:)

It was jst a creased breather pipe which wasnt letting the engine breath. So now he needs a new breather pipe
