View Full Version : Raceway rules for national day?

I've been thinking, and i can't find any threads that have said, but do we need any safety equip to do the quarter mile or 0-60?
As in fire extinguishers, helmets, gloves etc?
I don't want everyone to turn up thinking that theyre just going to be able to go straight on and be stopped?
I've tried the raceway website but its not working, and the link from another thread takes you to the web designer company page.
Also do we need to bring our licences, or have the lights and windows taped up??
Anyone have any ideas?
And if this does appear to be the dumbest question of the century, i do appologise! LOL
dont need a helmet unless your car does over 98 mph over the 1/4 (i think) you'll have to wear long sleeves though if i remember rightly and you'll need your driving licence but you wont need to tape your lights
at most 1/4 mile days there scrutineering aswell where they'll poke about your car and make sure everythings secure so make sure your battery is bolted down nice and tight and stuff like that and you'll be fine :)

Yeah the scrutineering is quite strict, they check your air filters and under bonnet accessories are all on securely. No oil leaks, water leaks, and just inspect the car relatively thoroughly.
The chap who does it though is a nice guy, seems quite reasonable.

When you actually go on the 1/4 mile!
1) You line up alongside the track, where you will be parallel to another car.
2) there is a marshall who will wave you to go to the back of the starting place, just tickle round the corner and wait for a few secs til the previous cars go
3) when they go, the marshalls at the lights will wave you forward
4) THE IMPORTANT BIT or look a twat like i did one!! There are two little lights at the top. YOu must tickle forward til both these lights come on, When you go forward, the first one appears, then as you go on a little bit more the second one comes on. If you go too far, they go off. Make sure when both lights are on YOU STOP!!
5) Keep your eyes on the lights, they'll go green but its at random intervals, only go on the green lights. Get revs up to about 3-4k and dunk the clutch when it goes green.
It aint rocket science, but just to prepare you all :D

danvilla2
08-09-2007, 08:08 PM
Leah - its really obvious most of the steps, just number 4 is where it might get a bit confusing. Read that for a bit of preparation
Just read it a few times and when your there you will understand

I'm quite tempted to put the 1.1 down it, obviously against another 1.1.
Wonder if people will wonder what on earth I'm doing quarter miling in a basic 106.
EDIT: Also, does anybody know the top speed you can get out of a 1.1 in 3rd? 1st is ~ 32, 2nd is ~ 54. 3rd?
danvilla2
08-09-2007, 08:26 PM
1.1s should go up there in the mid to late 18's i would guess, maybe a bit quicker, so wouldnt worry, no one cares. Standards quikys go up in late 17's

Safety wise - everything in your car must be bolted down well
No exposed arms (long shirts people or jackets)
If your car hits 100mph before the line you need a helmet (dont think many peoples here will!)
Other than that just make sure you give your car a good service and your good :D

Cheers ste. I think it will be a really good day - but not sure if I can camp over and get drunk as I'm not sure if I can get out of work on Sunday.
it'll be an awesome day there will be a few of the campers with sore heads though certain people tend to party really hard LOL
if you do camp though you'll love it theres never a dull moment

I might take mine down the strip then, but ive never done it either so we can all mess up at the same time. Does anyone know what the catering is like there and the prices approx, as the website is definately not working unless there is a different link to it.

I have read on the main national day thread, that for £20 you get camping spot, showers/toilets and parking for the whole weekend.
If by catering you mean food and drink, I would take your own, maybe a little barbeque if you're camping (they say they are fine with that.)
I'm sure you can buy tea and burgers on site but no doubt they will be pretty expensive!
£20 for the 1/4 mile is unlimited runs right?

Yes, food is prity expensive, your looking at over £3 for burgers and over a quid for coke, but suppose its like that everywhere.
Showers and toilets arent that of a 5* hotel, but they do the job i suppose.
And yeh, £20 to go on track

Ah right, i will be taking food and drink with me but i was unsure if we could buy food there as i will probably run out on the saturday. I might not be camping but i will definatley be there. The quarter mile run sounds like fun, so i may give it a go.
Jonny-R
08-09-2007, 10:21 PM
Yeah. I'm going for sure on the saturday but not too about camping. Will take a tent though so I can remove my spare tyre, most of the rear of the car and keep the stuff I travelled down with all safe for when I go on track.

some more things.... make sure you dont have muddy arches or they wont let you on as ull drop mud everywhere....
also even if you dont hit 100mph by the end, wear a helmet if you have one becuase accidents are not always your fault and there are nice barriers at the sides ( i think at shakespear?)..
as with the stage lights (the 2 at the top), be the one to be in per-stage first (the one who has both lights lit up and ready), as then it gives u time to get ready, as as soon as the other person is ready it is about 2-3 seconds before you go ;)
Leah we need to go practice our launches somewhere lol

Stall it, it wont start, get help push it back to the pits and realise we forgot to put petrol in it ( as the fuel gauge will break ), or that is what will happen to me. I hope it doesn`t happen now. Either way it will be a great weekend. Take some spare wheels to use on the strip.

you need your licence, MOT cert and insurance cert to go on the track guys
Do we need track insurance?
*l3ah06*
08-09-2007, 11:44 PM
no, doesnt say just normal insurance (pointless on a track anyways) and ren if you drive with the top down you need racing gloves.
car will be checked for any leaks and everything is secure, long sleeve top is a must
danvilla2
08-09-2007, 11:52 PM
They normally only ask for the driving licence pink card, but its worth putting MOT cert and insurance in aswell if you can and have got them, not going to weigh you down too much :P lol
My insurance doesnt really account for much as my name isnt on it and niether is my car as its a traders policy and im down as an employee :S
Leah...I wont be goin down the strip with me roof off......not very aerodynamic :p
If they dont like my insurance then they can refund me :p
Dave-R
09-09-2007, 02:05 AM
I thought insurance doesn't cover you on the track anyway? At least that's what I've been told by my girlfriend's Dad. She drives a Dodge Challenger at Santa Pod on a regular basis.
Not so long ago, in one of their American car magazines there was a dummies guide to the 1/4 mile. I'll see if I can find it again and scan the pages in for you guys (I'll start another thread somewhere so keep your eyes open). It told you how the tree works, the distance between the beams etc. etc.
hmmmmmmmm all this is going to make some good view for us poor gits sat in the stands LOL
*l3ah06*
09-09-2007, 08:11 PM
^ you can have a go with mine... lmao.
insurance is for public liability i guess - so if you run over anyone they can happily sue you and you wont be bothered.
Ste, you can try mine if ya like, see if i can persuade u into liking my dennis :p
*l3ah06*
09-09-2007, 08:18 PM

To those of you worried about taking 1.1s down the strip, dont worry about it, D4LLV took his down at USC at Santa Pod, there was a LOT more people there than there will be at the national day, and nothing was said then... Also, the thing i've been told a lot of people do when going down the strip is miss 3rd, so dont worry if you do that either, remember its all about having fun. Im even considering taking my diesel down the strip on the Sunday, if i feel up to it (or my new car if I've got one by then):D

miss third? from talking to my mate he said he had to pop it into forth before the end lol!
nah you dont need 4th just keep it planted in third and take it to the limiter you'll loose more time changing into 4th

12-09-2007, 02:40 PM
haha this sounds all fun really and its nice 2 see people are taking this as a laugh and not as a competition! well i better get my quickshift sorted! lol anyway this whole weekend what other clubs are there? or is it just our club and what other stuff is happening?
leeds106
12-09-2007, 04:14 PM
nah you dont need 4th just keep it planted in third and take it to the limiter you'll loose more time changing into 4th
you would be bette changin gear as both ways either hitting limiter or rolling over line both involve no power being used to move the car
you better swapping gears and getting a touch more acceleration than rolling over the line
you would be bette changin gear as both ways either hitting limiter or rolling over line both involve no power being used to move the car
you better swapping gears and getting a touch more acceleration than rolling over the line
ahhhh right i've always been lead to believe you'd loose more time making the last change
leeds106
12-09-2007, 06:00 PM
well if you think about it
hitting the limiter isnt getting you anywhere other than rolling along anyhow
the time you spend chanign gear wont slow the car down but if you have time to plant it in 4th the momentum the gear will make during exceleration will only help
the idea behind it is if your 1st 3 gears were long enough to not have to change or hit the limiter THEN that would help big time
danvilla2
12-09-2007, 06:14 PM
I'd agree with leeds, it all depends on the gear ratio though, my quiky hit the limiter (or about to) quite a bit before the line so i change up to fourth.'
Dave-R
12-09-2007, 06:25 PM
Like anything, you hit a certain point and you get a power drop off anyway. And remember, the 1/4 mile isn't a race.. it's a challenge to beat your personal best! :p
I'll write up my dummies guide to the 1/4 mile in the next few days and post it somewhere and let you guys know. Does anyone know what tree they'll be running (sportsman or pro)?
