View Full Version : Speaker wires through door?

I had a search but didn't come up with any information that was of any real use.

I'm basically wondering if anybody has any good ideas of how to get new speaker wires through the doors via those big black factory connectors on the GTI?? I have heard rumours of people just 'blindly' drilling the back of these connectors and running them through this way, but it all seems a bit to hit and miss for my liking. Too greater risk of damaging some of the other wires that are already in there.

I'm not really interested in drilling extra holes in the door as I wish to retain a stock look as far as I possibly can (and would probably have to remove the doors to do so!).

What have you guys done in the past to get around this problem?

Was thinking about this too. Cause the wires in there look awful thin and a bit old too.

I was going to tie it to the end of the old wire and pull it threw.

In another car I had I ran new cables straight to the speaker threw the middle of the car. Just to see what the difference would be and it was night and day. The new cable was much better than the standard stuff.

Yeah that's the problem I face. 28 awg wire doesn't handle 200w all that well. :D

i removed the black connectors from both sides put the new wires in from under the foot wells into the doors then made 2 small cutouts 4 the wire then put the connectors back taped them up and it still looks stock

This is what i did

We didnt "blindly" drill through the connectors. We had a good look and saw that there was no pins, meaning no wires, so we thread it throw the flexy bit, then drilled through the connector where there were no wired, then sealed with tiger seal

Many thanks for you replies guys!

106madness, got any pictures??

Shortstuff, your method looks very tidy mate! A lot better than most drilled connectors that I've seen.

I'm currently in the process of carefully cutting the black rubber off of the back of the connector so I can get at the pins. Once removed, I can get the crimps from work and connect the new speaker wires properly, in place of the old ones.

Still trying to decide on what to do about the exposed back of the connector though....thinking of making a mold of an new connector and re-potting the back of the modified connectors with new rubber just as they did at the factory.

Hi Envy106, many thanks for your reply. I think the connectors on the GTI may be a little different to yours (could be wrong though!) as there's no chance of being able to push wires through, even if I was to remove the existing crimps.
