Hey guys, I am a total noob when it comes to anything cars. Anyway, I have read up quite a bit on loads of things about active subs, amps and subs etc.
My budget is about £100 but I can raise it to £150 if it makes a huge difference.

My questions:
1. Everyone seems to put their subwoofer in the boot, does this not make it pretty quiet?
2. I dunno what to get. I have seen loads of things, but I don't have the technical know how on which is better. Could you possibly recommend an active subwoofer or an amp and subwoofer package that would give out a good sound?
These are a few that seem ok imo (retarded as it is)

3. Does my HeadUnit affect the sub/amp in any way? As long as there is a line out, will it be ok?

cheers

if your looking for quite a bit of bass go for the fli active twin my mate has one of these, but when he turns it it can be headachey!

1. Nope, it doesnt make it much quieter. the only thing between you and the subwoofer is the rear seats. all seats are made of is foam and cushion, so air is still able to travel through it at reasonable levels. obviously the power youre putting into the system will have a big effect. you can aim it either into the car towards you (sounds a bit better) or facing the bootlid. youl get a lot of rattle from the boot when faced towards the bootlid, but sound deadening would cure that. google 'sound deadening'.

2. what kind of sound are you looking for? how much bass do you want? do you have the right front speakers to be able to cope with a load of bass (ie cope with the sound level) if you want a loud system then look at getting a ported enclosure. what size sub do you want? what type of music do you listen to? you need to decide what you want your system to do before you look for what to buy.

3. Yes, head unit plays a big part. different head units have different pre-out voltages. do you already have one? or is that within the budget aswell? generally youre fine if you have an RCA out yeh, but if you want to expand later on with more amps and that, youl need more.

Oh right, thanks for the replies.
I am looking for something that would play drum and bass well, as that is the type of music I like. I want it loud, but not ears bleeding loud. I don't mind about the size, as I don't use my boot anyway.
I pretty much want my bass levels louder, as right now I can't get a proper thump when I am cruising :P

I have a Ministry of Sound MOSCA094SXI HU right now.

And I just have the stock front speakers, I am gonna upgrade them in time though, once I get some more cash.

Thanks again

Oh yeah, I can buy another head unit (I am not sure if it has an RCA out....) I would make my budget £180ish then.

EDIT:

That says it has 2 RCA outputs, and is red(to match the pug)
So that is £80, leaving £100 for the sub and amp.

this is just my opinion but i would stay away from fli stuff, rather get yourself a decent second hand system that will sound much better and have a better re-sale value if you want to upgrade further down the road. Now i say this to anyone that asks me about car audio but i think its the best advice i was ever given so will pass it on, head over to talk audio forums-http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/

they are really helpful and will answer your questions,
